Ten Internet Marketing Lessons My Grandmother Taught Me
During my childhood up until the age of about 13 my grandmother was a central figure in my life. I grew up in a single parent home and my grandmother was always there to assist with rearing, providing for and nurturing me.
Her strong influence has helped to mold me into the person that I am today. Her presence in my life is still felt daily. Today, like almost every day of my life, I thought about her a lot.
Today I fondly remembered many of the colorful phrases or adages that my grandmother often used. Strangely, I now see a correlation in many of my grandmother’s wise old sayings to internet marketing.
Although she passed away nearly thirty years ago, long before the dawn of internet marketing, I can still use the lessons that my grandmother taught me and use them as words of wisdom in governing my online business.
If you’ve ever had anyone in your life use creative language like my grandmother then chances are that you’ll relate to these sage lessons. Just in case, you don’t have a clue what my grandmother was talking about, I’ll translate them into modern internet marketing terms that you’ll more easily understand.
- Don’t put all of your eggs in one basket – Create multiple streams of income
- Procrastination is a thief of time – self explanatory
- Birds of a feather flock together – you will be judged according to your associates
- Don’t bite off more than you can chew – learn proper time management skills
- Kill two birds with one stone – build your list and make money at the same time
- Two heads are better than one – you need a JV partner
- What goes around comes around – the law of attraction
- Do unto others as you’ll have them do unto you – also self explanatory
- If you lie down with dogs you’ll get up with fleas – reminder, you will be judged according to your associates
- The early bird gets the worm – launch your product before anyone else
I hope this article gives you a lighter look at internet marketing and maybe you eve had a laugh or too. Maybe you’ll also see the parallels in the lessons that you learned long ago and how they can be applied to your business today.

Joanne:
Seems to me your grandmother and my mother must have been related!
Everything you said though is true. The last one:
>>>
10: The early bird gets the worm – launch your product before anyone else
>>>
really applies to a situation I am going through right now – as I write this. Just… Maybe… I was supposed to read it just when I did!
Thanks for your article.

All of these are pretty self explanatory and logic. That being said, I can’t stress the importance of number one. NEVER put all your eggs in one basket, because if that basket “breaks” you’re done..
Very intelligent tips your grand mother has given. And most of it we need in our industries.
I’ve made the mistake of not launching a site when I first thought of it and it cost me.
Here’s tip. Never mention new features to your site before they are ready. I did this once an had a competing site beat me to having the project done. I wanted input from members so I posted it on the forum and had spys watching…LOL
Smart lady! She reminds me of my grandmother. I like that this post was a gentle reminder that real world wisdom applies to marketing.
I vote for #6 being the most important – I can’t begin to think how many times I’ve used someone else to help me out in several ventures. It just makes good business sense as NOBODY knows everything.
I am a big believer in number one. If you don’t diversify your income you are taking a big risk. Many small companies go under because they only have one or 2 big clients and when something goes wrong with those clients the company goes down with them.
When it comes to the competition I disagree with number 8. I believe: do unto others before they do unto you. Moving first keeps you ahead of the game.
Life lessons properly converted quite nicely. I must say the first rule is incredibly important, multiple revenue streams is imperative to success.

Procrastination is a thief of time…
Oh how true that is.
I have found a pretty good way to work with this. I do all the stuff that is not absolutely necessary first and leave the critical and necessary stuff for last. This might seem counterproductive but it has helped me because once I have finished all the unnecessary stuff and want to take a break I don’t allow myself to because I still have all the important stuff to do.
If I saved the on-important stuff for last I would probably would rarely have the motivation to even work on it cause hey… it’s not that important!

Kill two birds with one stone – build your list and make money at the same time this is awesome. and yeh your grandmother really gave you something which can help you through out your rest business time.
I think that one and ten are most important, a teacher wise.

A fun post, one that made me reminisce about the sayings of my grandparents. Its funny how these sayings can relate to internet marketing.
One I feel is very important is “Do unto others as youll have them do unto you.” You make a lot of contacts in Internet Marketin, and even though you may never see these people, it is crucial to treat them how you want to be treated…you never know when one of those people is going to be a big help to you!

Once again there is some great info in those post. I guess sometimes grandmas aren’t completely useless

Thanks for this blog I learned a lot of marketing techniques from you……cijo
most of your ideas are nice thanks for you sharing these wonderful ideas. but i m dissgree with n0.8 because I believe: do unto others before they do unto you. Moving first keeps you ahead of the game.
I like point 4. You should only start a new site if you already have under complete control all your current sites.
Henry
4. Dont bite off more than you can chew – This applies to me alot, my time management skills are not that great. I find myself reading and taking in too much information.
Your grandmother would of made a great internet marketer.
Jason
Many of your grandmother’s phrases are very relevant to internet marketing, its pretty strange how such old and simple advice can be appiled to something as new and comprehensive as internet marketing.
Thanks for the niche infos from ur grandmum
Say hello to your grandmam. She knows this job
Great post – I think all of these can be used in every part of life (including internet marketing) – Thanks for posting this.
Makes me think I should make up a list to pass on to my grandchildren now …
No.9 brought a loud laughter to the room!
Thanks for sharing.
Your Grand mother sounds very similar to my grandmother. Very wise women.
Your grandmother sounds a lot like mine. She and my grandfather were big influences in my life even though I came from a two parent family.
The lessons you shared are timeless and will always be applicable no matter what you are doing.
I have one to add to the list:
There is more than one way to skin a cat – think, be innovative and approach problems and tasks from many angles to find solutions that work.
I learned that important problem-solving strategy from my grandfather. It also implies patience, focus and perseverance.
Great article,
Sherri
I enjoyed the article. I think the spin on taking everyday quotes and throwing in the marketing twist. Nice touch.

Dont bite off more than you can chew – learn proper time management skills
Aha, yes. That also goes for selecting the right niche. Narrow niches tend to be less competitive and far easier to succeed in!
but also you dont want to spread yourself too thin and ruin the quality of work you produce.
The competition in the world of online business is growing at a fast gear. Verisign reported 16% growth in domain name registrations in 2003. Presently, the total numbers of registered domain names have reached to 60 million, with .com enjoying the largest share.
Great article, and I love the approach you took. Had me laughing, but it is totally true.
Oh my, Joanne’s article is so insightful! Now that I am thinking of it, my grandma also has sayings that could be twisted to fit my business needs. Thanks!

Nice advices that got me thinking though. I like the one that states two heads think better than one. – Rif Chia
My Grampa’s favorite was “You’ve got to do something, even if it’s wrong.”
The lessons I learned from that?
1. You can’t let fear hold you back.
2. Imperfect is ok.
3. It’s better to have something done than to analyze it to death and never get started.
