I was thinking about that just yesterday and I think 99% of this social bookmarking stuff does nothing except add to somebody's database. When I try to conjure up a vision of what it all amounts to I see a circle of people all joined hands....i.e. each person is 'connected' to the other. Ahhhh yes! Can't you just feel the love. Lemme hear ya say say it!! LOVE!! Then somebody comes around with a tray of champaign.....or some nice Triscuit crackers and a tasty cracker spread. And you can't grab one because.....yeah. You got it........'cause you're all busy 'being connected'. You're right in the point of your article: Ya gotta get on with your own life.
