Generating traffic from YouTube is relatively easy, since it’s a very popular site which the search engines index very frequently.

YouTube is a community site for watching and sharing user made videos.

That’s because YouTube enables all members to easily upload and share video clips on their site and across the Internet through embedding these videos in websites, blogs, mobile devices and email.

Watching and sharing means YouTube, like many other social networks, serves multi purposes.

On the one hand you can get exposure for your videos, on the other hand you can watch what others think and look for popular topics and trends.
You can find plenty of topics at YouTube. Since it’s a Google company, their search capabilities are huge.

But today we’ll concentrate on generating traffic from YouTube.

In order to do that well and very efficiently, you’d better handle things right from the first time on. So here are 10 tips on how to get more traffic from YouTube.

Make the videos viral, and spread them to as many websites as possible.

Make sure the sound on your videos is clear and mixed and edited well so users can clearly hear it.

Embed your logo and website into the video somehow. You can do this with text at the end or beginning, or by including your logo or URL throughout the entire video.

Have goals for your YouTube videos, but remember that there are thousands of videos on the site, and some have millions of hits while others only have a couple hundred. Set realistic goals.

Keep content funny, engaging, and informative so viewers will watch it from beginning to end

Think about overall color schemes. Some videos may record in a yellow or red hue. This can affect viewer’s opinions subliminally, so try to keep the colors realistic.

Be yourself. Do not lose sight of the purpose and mission of the video. Be yourself and loosen up when speaking.

Remember that nothing is perfect in online videos unless you have a professional editor, so just have fun and keep the goal in mind.

Practice before posting the final video. Do a few dry runs before taping and publishing.

Create a series of ongoing videos or stories, so users will be hooked and want to learn more.

Do more than just talk. People don’t want to sit and watch a person just talking to the camera. Make it exciting and interesting as well as fun.

According to their own website, Yahoo Answers is a ‘knowledge-sharing community’.

The most remarkable element of Yahoo Answers is that the knowledge is compiled randomly.

If one of the members has a burning question she can post it on Yahoo Answers and wait for other members to come in and provide answers, no matter what topic.

That makes Yahoo Answers multi-usable, because you can ask questions about, for example, your new product before you build it and expect some interesting answers from potential buyers.

And of course you can browse the knowledge base for interesting answers on other questions and other topics you may have.

But we’re going to use this knowledge community to drive traffic to our sites.
You can achieve that by providing answers to questions on topics you consider yourself expert on and have your answer compete with others as being the best.

Because the best answer will get the most exposure inside the topic at hand and very good answers are occasionally featured on the Yahoo! Answers Blog. Which brings in even more website traffic!

In order to use Yahoo Answers to drive traffic to your site, here are 8 great tips.

Check your spelling and grammar before posting the answer. Mistakes in spelling can be embarrassing and people will question your answers when this happens.

If you don’t know the answer, do not pretend to. People can smell a liar a mile away, so answer honestly and only the things you know about.

Try not to sound as if you’re chatting. Instead, use concise, informative language that gives them a straight answer without all of the filler.

Do not answer politically motivated questions unless you’re promoting a political website. Otherwise, you could lose potential customers who disagree with your views.

You do not have to only link to your website; link to your Twitter, Digg, StumbleUpon, or other page as well, since it will also ultimately lead people back to your contact information and home page.

New answers to questions can be posted through RSS sign up, so use that for your questions and see what other people are saying. It’s a good way to see what the competition or other users are saying.

As things change, make sure your questions change as well. In other words, current events related or technology related questions might need some updating later on as new information emerges.

Although some answers require a link to other retailers or online stores, as a business it’s not a good idea to lead people to anywhere other than your website, or sites that relate to your business niche.

There you have ‘em! Eight Yahoo Answers traffic tips.

But that’s not all. I even have another 40 of these tips to generate more traffic from this knowledge community site.

One of the best Twitter descriptions comes from their About page:

Twitter is a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices.

Now, you may agree with me that’s just a feature, but it perfectly leads to the very best Twitter benefits and thus unveils why this network is tremendously popular.

You see, Twitter is based on human psychology.

One of the founders, Jack Dorsey, was very interested in an application that would let him know what his friends were doing. He’s no exception, many people want to know that (hence the success of cell phones!). That desire lead to the development of Twitter.

Absolutely needless to say that this doesn’t apply to you or me, we’re just too smart to fall for such psychological trivialities , but in general, people:
1. are very curious and
2. want to belong to a community.

Twitter perfectly takes advantage of these natural needs. After you open an account, all they ask is only one question:

“What’s happening?”

Once you’ve answered that question, you’re sold. Especially since you only have 140 characters to send your messages, which for most people by far isn’t enough to get their message across. You want to send more.

And it makes the received ‘tweets’, as they are called, a bit mystic, like cliffhangers. You’re curious, you want to know more.

The downside is that this also leads to a lot of irrelevant information published on this micro blogging system, which on its turn is a big bummer for many other people. They quit.

But if you can filter that, or if you don’t mind the occasional garbage, Twitter can be a great traffic resource.

Therefore I’ve listed six of the best Twitter traffic tips below. Make sure you use them well and don’t forget to download the other 40 tips at the bottom.

Network with noteworthy business associates, competitors, and peers.
You don’t have to simply befriend every person you can that requests you or vice versa on Twitter. Instead, choose your networking buddies carefully. Look for fellow executives or business owners who work within your particular niche. Then, follow their progress, look for advice, and of course, throw in some of your own two cents as well.
By befriending people who are in the same line of work as you, you’ll get an insider’s look at how their successes compare to yours.

Update your audience fairly regularly, but don’t over load them.
A lot of people are most likely interested in what you have to say, otherwise they probably wouldn’t have added you to begin with. This means you should be updating them on a fairly regular basis so they can keep up with what’s happening in your world or your business’ world.

On the other hand, you don’t want to overload people so much that the feel of your Twitter site feels “spammy” and they turn away.
Try to maintain the balance between good updating and overwhelming people with insignificant updates.

Keep an eye on what people are saying.
Don’t forget that Twitter, like any other virtual conversation, is a two-way street. Pay attention to what other members are saying, and see if they’re Twittering about you. If they are, you might want to use that as an opportunity to either thank them for a nice compliment, or to make good if they are posting a complaint.

Remember that you’re never 100% safe from someone who might try to talk negatively about you, your website, or anything else on Twitter. Be sure to use this to your advantage in a diplomatic way.

Find a cool template that says who you are as company.
Twitter now allows users to customize the look of their home page. Use something individual and creative as your Twitter page. This can be the same graphics you use on your website, a company logo, or something you’ve customized just for Twitter.
No matter what it is, make sure it’s appealing to the eyes and does not look too ‘busy’.

Ask for feedback. Don’t just tell everyone what you’re doing via Twitter, try to ask everyone for their opinion or feedback. It’s a good way to start a dialogue and open up a forum for new suggestions and changes that can be made.

Stumble Upon is a Web2.0 community site that allows its users to discover and/or submit and rate Web pages, photos, and videos.

Stumble Upon lets you, simply by clicking a “Stumble” button in their toolbar, surf random sites by topic, recommended by your friends who ‘tag’ their favorite sites.
The latter makes StumbleUpon a social bookmark site.

When you Stumble, you will only see pages recommended by friends and like-minded stumblers. Thus you can find great content quite different from using search engines.

Using Stumble Upon can deliver a great deal of web traffic, provided you use this site well.
Therefore I’ve listed 8 traffic tactics below.

Make sure your website is up to par. Since people will be “stumbling upon” your site, you want to make sure it looks good as soon as they click on the link.

Just like Twitter, StumbleUpon is a social networking website, so be sure to get as many contacts and networking friends as possible.

Complete your profile as thoroughly as possible before linking. This way, when people click on your information, they get an idea of who you are or who your business is.

Make sure you comment on other peoples’ pages and review them as well. This shows you’re an active user who cares about what others are saying.

Tag the most essential elements. Stumble Upon uses tags, which are a lot like keywords. Be sure to tag your site using the most effective, power packing tags possible. Try to pick nouns and use ones that will pique peoples’ interest immediately. While you must use one topic on the site, you can use multiple tags and change them up as needed.

Decide right away that you’re going to be an important part of the Stumble Upon web community, and then stick with it. Feeble posters or people who are fly by night are easy to detect, and most people will stay away from that.

Think about your target audience. Then, create customized content just for them. By putting information out there that caters to your audience and your customer base, you will get solid followers who should turn into sales or referrals.

Make sure the people who stumble end up being regular visitors or customers. You can do this by adding an RSS button at the bottom of our page, an email subscription link, or any other method that will bring interested people in even closer.

There you have it. Eight quick tips for Stumble Upon traffic.
And if you want to connect, just subscribe HERE and give me a Stumble.

But that’s not all. I even have another 40 tips to generate more traffic from this outstanding social bookmarking site.
You can get all 50 by just subscribing to my newsletter. After you’ve confirmed your subscription, you can download all 50 StumbleUpon traffic tactics.

Squidoo is a publishing platform that allows its users to create pages on all kind of topics. These pages are called lenses.

Squidoo matters, because it is a totally free tool that you can use to promote your website(s), yourself, your own products or affiliate products.

The most important aspect of Squidoo is that it’s updated so often that Google LOVES the site. Fresh content every second. And that’s why big G indexes Squidoo lenses very fast.

That’s the main reason this site is so popular. On their home page, Squidoo says:

Share what you care about. Get found. Get followed. Get influential

Actually, Squidoo operates as a traffic generator when you use the right keywords. To use Squidoo as such, you’d better use it well.

Therefore I have listed 8 great tips on how to Squidoo below.

Make sure your page on Squidoo looks its absolute best. A polished page gets more results.

Don’t be afraid to promote and market your business and website through your profile or content.

Use the Flickr module to incorporate cool photos. Visually appealing lenses and modules typically have the most success.

Use tags to your advantage, and do so by making the most effective tags possible using powerful wording and linking to the best sites that will get you real results.

Find your voice on Squidoo. Think about who you are and what you’re trying to accomplish. Brainstorm some content ideas and think about your plans in advance before setting up your profile and lenses.

Update your profile to allow people to contact you so that you are available to your customers, potential clients, and anyone who wants to ask you something. Being accessible is a great way to gain a good reputation.

Edit your modules so they are not just the ones generated from Squidoo. Tailor them to each lens, so it looks more through and professional.

Don’t forget that spam is NOT welcome on Squidoo, and your account could be cancelled if you spam. Find out about their guidelines before publishing anything.

There you have it. Eight quick tips on how to Squidoo.

But that’s not all. I even have another 40 tips to generate more traffic from Squidoo.

LinkedIn is a business-oriented social networking site.

It was launched in May 2003 mainly used for professional networking and that’s where LinkedIn separates itself from the other social networking sites.

LinkedIn is a social network site where people can find jobs by creating an interesting profile and companies can find employees scanning these profiles.

In LinkedIn you can connect to other people based on the sort of relationship you have with them and the network shows these connections to other people and groups, so it works kind of like the Internet, from one link to another.

Thus, creating your profile, growing your network and interacting with other LinkedIn members may result in finding a job or hiring people.

Right now LinkedIn has more than 50 million users worldwide. Half of them are from the United States. India is the fastest growing country, China, no doubt, will follow soon.

In Europe 11 million use LinkedIn and it is very popular in The Netherlands with a 30% adoption rate per capita.

That proves that, since LinkedIn’s main purpose is to provide business opportunities for professionals from all over the world, they seem to do a very good job.

Since LinkedIn is a bit different, it’s very wise to setup your account well from the beginning.
Here are 9 short tips to start your LinkedIn account.

Complete your profile as thoroughly as possible, and include interests, an avatar, and business information.

Answer questions. Use your knowledge to your advantage by answering peoples’ questions thoroughly and expertly, and you’ll gain other users’ confidence.

Be sure to explain your work experience in as much detail as possible. Don’t just list employers or experience, but instead expand upon it by showing others’ what you’ve done in detail.

Have a plan in place when you begin to build your network, otherwise you may end up getting some contacts you don’t want, and not enough of the ones you do.

Do not just be friends with people because they ask you to. It looks a little odd for a professional member to be friend with their partying buddies from college. Leave the casual online friendships to Facebook.

Keep in mind the number of characters in profile fields are limited, so you may want to do a few practice runs first before publishing everything.

Ask others within the community for advice. Since this site was designed for networking, people are usually more than willing to answer questions and give help.

Compliment others and give them praise when you’re speaking to them, so that they reciprocate. It makes both of your profiles look much better and can increase your exposure and ratings.

Do not only mention what you’ve done, but include what you’ve produced. Be sure to post results from your actions and include facts and figures if possible.

There you have it. Nine tactics to use LinkedIn in a professional way.
And if you want to connect with me, you can check out my profile, but I warn you, I’m very picky on who I add to my LinkedIn network. It’s just too valuable, so you’d better give me a great introduction and a good reason to accept you.

But that’s not all. I even have another 40 tips, all to get as much LinkedIn connections as you want.
You can get all 50 by just subscribing to my newsletter. After you’ve confirmed your subscription, you can download All 50 high-powered tactics on using LinkedIn for your business.

Digg is an important social media site (http://www.digg.com).

People visiting Digg can discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet, submitted by other Internet users.

They can even vote and comment on submitted links and stories. If you vote for a story, then that’s called a Digg. Voting against a story is a Bury. This is the cornerstone of Digg.

So, if you think you have something interesting to share, you can Digg It. And if your Digg makes it to the home page, you’ll get a lot of traffic from it. And that makes Digg interesting for marketers.

However, not that many Diggs make it to the home page.
So, to get the most out of your submitted content, I’ll list 8 Digg tactics to get you more traffic. Here goes.

Do not Digg every single thing you see. By Digging every little posting, you look less legitimate, and you’re giving certain people more credit than they actually deserve. The goal is to Digg content that is relevant and well put together, not just everyone’s postings.

Submit a good amount of posts, but don’t overdo it. Some people will submit so much content every day that they overload the website and their profile. It’s not a attractive habit, and it can make people leery. Instead, only post a few, select things per day.

Avoid spamming people with keywords. They are very important, but too many of one particular thing can drive people away almost instantly. Savvy users know spam when they see it, so DON’T DO IT!

Do not make baseless claims. If you post some topics or information, do not make promises you cannot keep. It’s never a good idea to sound like a salesman or make pitches for things people may not want. Instead, entice them to your site to make a purchase with relevant content.

Be open. The users of Digg are pretty open, honest, and out there when it comes to how they feel about things. If you do not like something, don’t feel like you cannot express it. Just do so with a bit of discretion so you are not bashing people or businesses to the point of no return.

Look for the power users of the site, and then be friends with them. This is a huge help to you because others will see that you’re associated with them, and it will help you get much more exposure in the long run.

Keywords are very important. Just like any articles or information on your website, keywords are what get peoples’ attention, so think some through and then use them in your posting title and in your content.

Relevant content is important, and currently topics like the environment, science, breaking news, politics, technology, and comedy are hot topics. Use these in relation to your business somehow, so that people will want to know more.

There you have it. Eight tactics to use Digg.
And if you want to connect in Digg, just Add Me To Your Friends.

But that’s not all. I even have another 42 tips, all to get as much Digg traffic as you want.
You can get all 50 by just subscribing to my newsletter. After you’ve confirmed your subscription, you can download All 50 high-powered tactics on using Digg for your business.

About two weeks ago, I signed up for Plurk (my profile). I liked it, since, in contrast to Twitter, it’s easy to follow conversations. Te-Ge just published a great intro to Plurk: 10 Minute Guide to Plurk.

And only yesterday, Steven Humphrey invited me to a new social network called Fast Pitch.
I signed up to see what it was and immediately received an invitation to join a group. Few minutes later, a second invite was sent to me. I still have to investigate this one.

So how about you. Can you still follow all developments in social networks?

Below are some interesting links that possibly make it easier for you to follow what’s going on.

At Marketing Pilgrim, Janet Meiners writes about Men More Likely to be on LinkedIn, Flickr. She gives an interesting overview of several social network sites divided in age groups. And of course she also tells you where women hang out most.

Liz Strauss has an interesting post. What can you do with 1,000 friends at Facebook when your car breaks down? Read it at Social Networking: It’s Not Who You Know — It’s Whether You Know Yourself

My good friend Willie Crawford, who is always looking at the practical side of things, published an outstanding post, explaining how you can market your products and services on Twitter.
In this post, Willie also gives away a free ebook on How To Bookmark Effectively For Massive Free Website Traffic. You can, although it’s part of a GiveAway event, download it completely free and even without giving your email address, but if you are smart, you may sign up for more interesting advice.

If you’re in the coaching business, you most definitely want to read Are The Social Bookmarkers Doing It For Your Coaching Business? by Paul Duxbury, the coaching expert.

Furthermore, I’ve read some very good advice from Jeremiah Owyang about Build Your Network Before You Need Them, the real essence of building a social network.

And did you know that the secret behind long lasting relationships is reciprocity – returning calls? The more often you call each other, the longer your relationship. That’s the outcome of a recent study that Maki uses to explain relationships in online social networks. That’s an interesting read (as always with Maki).

Finally, if you want to know which social networking sites are the most visited according to Alexis, read Jack Humphrey’s Top 10 Social Sites By Alexa Ratings.

Have fun reading.
Let me know what you think.

I just read Mark Butler’s post ‘Twitter is Stupid‘ on Courtney Tuttle’s blog. Woohoo, it’s creating dust already!

I do not agree with Mark, but I certainly can relate to some of the objections he has about Twitter.

Before going in to that, let me admit that I’ve managed to limit my time on social networking by setting a certain time schedule for visiting Twitter. If I can’t make it, I’ll skip Twitter and that happens quite often.
Also, when I use Twitter, or any other social network platform, I like to make sense with my remarks or shut my mouth, with the exception of a rare occasional chitchat.

Having said that, let’s go back to Mark’s post.

For starters, his remark about ‘nothing meaningful is being said’ is true. And boy, I see a lot of those tweets.
Maybe they could mean something for someone else, especially when you’re communicating with someone you personally know?
I’m sort of playing the the devil’s advocate here, but I should admit Mark is right: there’s a lot of irrelevant data most people have little or no interest in.
Therefore I scan the tweets with Twhirl. After using it for a while, you’ll get experienced in picking the interesting tweets out of the huge batch of information. I recommend using this tool.
Another one you can try is Quotably. It tries to thread the tweets, so you can follow a conversation. It’s not working perfectly, but worth to try.

Next.
The politically correct phrased objection ‘twitter is something the A List bloggers are promoting as a way to get their groupies to follow them’ is also true to a certain extent, although you can also say that they are ‘trying to increase their own community and build a bigger network’.
They, too, want to get something out of it, like poll results, other forms of opinions and even great content. But what’s against that? It’s not mandatory, they give you a choice, don’t they?
Using exactly this strategy, one of my posts ended up at Darren Rowse’ Problogger.net. I was quite happy with that bit of extra exposure.

The second part of that objection is ‘begging (the followers) for a shred of acknowledgment with some sort of “@joeshmoe” response to a….tweet ‘.
Yeah, some do that and I don’t like it either. The A-blogger can’t help it, only recognize it.
But so many others deliver valuable responses. And it definitely is a two-way process. Only yesterday, I had Maki of DoshDosh.com subscribe to my feed as a result of my response to one of his tweets. I was quite happy with that and didn’t think of it as a waste of time on Twitter. Would you?

By the way, talking about Maki, he has one of the best blogs on the Net and I really love to read his posts. Like :
Managing Information Flow about how to prioritize information highly effectively, including tweets from Twitter.
Understanding the Value of ‘Friends’ in Social Media Websites explains what purposes friends networks serve.

And there are a lot more of highly valuable posts at DoshDosh!
And on other blogs, like Copyblogger.com, EntrepreneursJourney.com and CourtneyTuttle.com, just to name a few.

What’s wrong with following these people on social media sites like Twitter? You get to know them a lot better, which makes it easier to communicate with them in a meaningful way.

And here we have arrived at the most useful benefit of using Twitter (yes, for as long as it lasts):

you have personal access to anyone using Twitter and
all people in Twitter are VERY responsive!

And let me immediately emphasize that this does not only apply to A-list bloggers, ‘guru’s or experts. It also applies to others.

Only yesterday evening, Vlad (who I already knew) of Sageblogger.com and Kerry Morrison (who I didn’t know at all) of Kmo.ca helped me out finding a teleseminar that I HAD to attend, but didn’t have the information about.
That’s just an example of many, but what makes this one so interesting is that I wasn’t on Twitter at all. Only when I discovered I didn’t receive the right information, I logged in and got what I needed within 5 minutes!

That’s making use of Twitter effectively.
No, Twitter is not stupid for me. Maybe you want to try again Mark? Oh, and you don’t use Twitter to generate traffic. You use it mainly to extend your personal network, the rest will follow.

Let’s hear what you have to say about Twitter.
Post your comments below.

Only recently I posted about how to use Facebook effectively. In that post I indicated that there are too many features that are distracting and take up too much of my time.

The same applies to other social networking platforms.
Mind you, they’re all great to build a network and I certainly recommend using them. I’ll even go one step further: I invite you to add me to your social networks at
Facebook
LinkedIn
Twitter

Send me a message, so I know who you are or where you’re coming from.
Let’s make this agreement: we can have a (virtual) coffee together and chat or communicate about improving each others online efforts and everything that comes with it, but we will not waste each other’s time using gimmicks, ok?

So, how do you avoid spending too much time on social networking?
I could write a few things about it, but I’d rather have other people, who apparently experienced the same, talk about it.

My friend Dr. Mani just published a great post at his blog entitled: Don’t Waste Time On Social Networking!

Daniel Socco and his team wrote a great post about 8 addictive habits of bloggers that take up too much time. I sure can relate to them as I too have personally struggled with each of these at some point. Daniel show you how you can get rid of them

And here’s a great video post from Ed Dale about Why I Don’t Follow Many People On Twitter – I choose to follow EVERYONE!

Let me add my personal best time saver. It’s not about social networking per se, but has to do with it.
It’s about email and reading hundreds of messages each day.

A few months ago, my domain was used to send out a mass mailing.
Of course I didn’t want that to happen again, so I deleted most mail boxes at my domain -I just kept a few with rather unknown names to continue earning money- and unsubscribed from all newsletters.

I then used my Gmail account to re-subscribe to newsletters that I absolutely didn’t want to miss, skipping hundreds of others, thus decreasing the number of incoming messages.

Gmail allows you to label all incoming emails and archive a lot of them for later reading. I love that feature and go through my labels once every week to see what’s interesting and what can be deleted.
Handling my email in this way saved me a lot of time.

Some of these labels are for social networking platforms where I keep messages that I may need later.
It makes a great archive.

So, how about you?
Do you spend a lot or too much time networking?
