Six Simple Steps To Build A Highly Profitable Niche Business

Many marketers focus on ‘making money’ rather than building a ‘real business’.
By ‘making money’, I mean things like bum marketing that aren’t sustainable and that can’t be grown.
It’s important that you focus on growing a business now. A business selling products, with prospect lists, with buyer lists, with systems, and with the potential for growth and back-end income.

In this article I’m going to reveal the simple steps you need to take to have your own profitable niche marketing business. Let’s get going…

Step 1: Niche Identification & Research
As always, the first step is to identify your niche, or your market. The number one characteristic your market should have is that there are already people buying products. With your business you’re going to be selling. Whether it be your own digital products, physical products, services, or someone else’s. That’s the way you make money so make sure the market you choose already has proven buyers.

Step 2: Product Creation
You’ve identified your market and hopefully you’ve researched the competition, potential partners, market trends, what your prospects want and all the rest. Now you can create your own product. I always recommend starting with a short, low priced report just to test the market and to build a list of buyers that you can profit from in the future.

One thing I will say on product creation is that the single most important thing is that you create quality. Competition is fierce online, and the only way you can stand out from the rest is by providing quality content for your prospects and buyers. Just take a look at the rise of Lee McIntyre in the last 6 months or so. Why has he become one of the most talked about internet marketers? Why has he been able to have 5 figure months after just a short time online? One reason – he provides quality. Not only for his buyers, but also for his free subscribers.

Step 3: Copywriting
I’ve only recently understood the power of copywriting. Copywriting is not limited to your sales page. Copywriting involves your sales message, your emails, your articles, the name of your product. Every aspect of your business should do something to persuade your prospect to invest in your products.

I have one short report on the market in the “beauty” niche. This is a big, passionate market. 3 months ago I was getting 500 visitors per month and 3 (yes, THREE!) sales per month at $10.

My sales page just didn’t have that WOW factor. It was beautifully structured and read fluently, but it didn’t grab attention, or persuade, or convince anyone why they should buy the product. Fast forward 3 months and after a little editing I’m now getting approximately 600 visitors per month and close to 35 sales. There’s still room to grow, but that’s a massive improvement. It’s important to learn basic copywriting principles if you are to be successful with this business model.

Step 4: Traffic Generation
You have your sales page, now you need traffic… and buyers. Driving traffic can be done in many different ways. There are creative methods, and there are your regular run of the mill type methods. I prefer the traditional article marketing, back links, joint ventures, SEO. I find this to bring the best quality of traffic and to be the best long-term strategy.

Again, the focus is on quality. You need to write quality articles, get links from quality sites, JV’s from quality partners. Everything about your business should ooze quality.

Step 5: Backend Profits
The main profits from this business model will come from the back-end. The short report should simply be used as a filter; to filter out the dead wood and the people who wouldn’t spend money with you anyway. What you’re left with are people that trust you, people that are able to (and comfortable) with buying products online, and – if you have provided quality – people that will buy from you again, and again, and AGAIN!

Here’s how the process should work:

Prospect comes to your site, likes what she see’s and buys your short report for $10.
Immediately after payment, she is redirected to the download page where she downloads her product and signs up for your list.
You now send her emails (perhaps 2 per week). Sometimes you can pitch affiliate products and other products you develop, but most of the time you send her top quality content. Look after your subscribers, and the rest will take care of itself. This subscriber could be on your list for the next ten years. She could spend thousands of dollars with you. You could have thousands of subscribers that do the same. Do you see the potential?

Step 6: Grow Your Operation
You’ve created one short report now. You’re getting a lot of traffic, buyers and subscribers. Now it’s time to grow your operation. Create more short reports and get more people into your funnel. Create longer products that you can sell for more money. Create physical products that you can sell for three figure prices. Sell your expertise by mentoring a few subscribers for four figure prices. Host seminars and sell tickets for five figure prices.

This is how you build a business. Stop thinking small time with bum marketing and pay-per click affiliate marketing. That’s great if you want a few hundred dollars a week, but that’s not what you should be striving for.

Guidelines:
- Must be a true story. Don’t make something up just to contribute!

- 2-4 pages preferred. Single spaced, regular 12pt font size. BUT… if you article is full of great content and is a great story, obviously exceptions can be made. But do try to stick to the 2-4 page guideline.

- Your content must be an ethical strategy (spam blasting, cheating, scams, etc not allowed). Maybe you made mistakes months or years ago when you started and you were spamming anything and everything. That’s fine. Hope you’ve learned your lessons. BUT… the story of those results won’t suffice. Please find the first LEGITIMATE $100 (approx) that you’ve created ONLINE.

- You should describe at least your first $100 worth of steps taken. So if your first ever income online was selling a set of golf balls on Ebay where you made $15 net profit… then also add in your 2nd way of how you generated an income. Give the reader a look at how you created at least $100. NOTE: If your first ever idea produced thousands, by all means PLEASE include that story.

- Try to offer a bit of background and tell it like a story or with conversational writing (ie: this is NOT a technical journal).

- Feel free to mention the lessons you’ve learned to provide the reader with some points to take away. In fact, feel free to include screen shots and specific numbers if/when possible.

- Your story’s particulars (that is to say the money making part) should be geared towards a “beginner” … Therefore using acronyms, big words etc…. won’t help them understand it. Please, keep that in mind.

- The less fancy formatting you use, the quicker and less problematic it is to add into the project. So cutting the text off at 65 characters, indentation, use of multiple fonts and colors etc isn’t helpful. If possible, please avoid these.

- Please run spell check and quickly proof your submission (makes the job easier for the editors).

- Profile pictures are recommended but you MUST send them as a separate file (vs just copy/pasting into Word). The final document is being compiled via Publisher and it’s easier to work with images if they are added in “raw” vs. copy/pasted from your word file. NOTE: If you’d like to include screenshots, etc … it’s encouraged but again, please send the images you use separately as well (though you’ll want them in your .doc so I know where you wanted them placed).

- Only YOUR domains will be hyperlinked and only within reason (ie: don’t list 10 of your sites just for the sake of it). But no affiliate links will be permitted. Also, blogspot and squidoo links, etc won’t be linked either. If you’d like to drive traffic to a blogger page (for example), please use a domain redirect.

- OPTIONAL BUT RECOMMENDED: Include a “by-line” or “resource box” at the end of your article. It makes sense that you should include a bit of information of who you are (edification about you) but also include a link back to your web page. It must be your own web page (no affiliate links permitted).

- As a contributor… you’ll be setup to earn 100% commission once the product is launched. BUT… please note that you will NOT be permitted to give copies away freely or at your discretion. This is a group project and is owned by the group. Please respect that by NOT giving away copies of the finished product.

- First 100 submissions (approved submissions!) get included … though there’s always room for a volume 2 … but the sooner you write/provide yours, the more likely you’ll be part of it.

NOTE: If you’d like to include a video in conjunction with your text, send it in. It can help add more dimensions to the product, a lot more perceived value AND will build better rapport for you with the reader.

- To submit your story, please provide it in either .txt or .doc format (not PDF!) and send it as directed below:

1) Send an email to info AT 27am DOT com with your .txt or .doc file attached (or a link to where I can download it from).

2) IMPORTANT: The subject of your email must be “100 Stories Contributor” … this way I find it easier.

3) You must also include contact details in your email … full name, email address and, preferably, phone or Skype in case I (or another editor) need to contact you.

How To Build Great One-Way Quality Links

I frequently get questions about building one-way links and I see them posted on all kind of forums. Many people don’t know how to do that or, if they do, they often find it too time-consuming and complex.

That’s true. Building great one-way links to your website or blog IS time-consuming and boring, but there’s a great solution for that which I will show you below.

Before going into that, let’s talk about how to create high quality one-way links. Now, I’m not a specialist in link building, nor am I a search engine ranking optimizer. I just follow common rules and that’s what I talk about in this post.
If you want the juicy details of building one-way quality links, do a search on your favorite engine and tons of expert sites will come up.

Why you want one-way incoming links?
Getting other sites link to yours will improve the importance of your site for search engines and they use that in some way to rank sites. The more incoming (inbound) quality links you have, the more important your site must be (apart from exceptions).

So, if you want your site to get listed well in search engines, you should really attempt to get quality inbound links to it.

What is a quality link?
But what is a quality inbound link? Several factors play a role here.

Like the authority (importance) of the site linking to you. The more authority the linking site has, the more valuable the link is.

The anchor text used in the link (the text part of the link) is another one. You want that to be the main keyword used on the page the link refers to, which should not always be your home page. Also, the anchor text should vary a bit every now and then.

Like anchor text, the IP addresses from the inbound links need to vary. That is, coming from different sites on different servers. Too many from one puts you at risk, so you have to spread your one-way links.

Another factor is the relevancy of the site linking to you. Any link is better than no link at all, but the best ones for this site are links from other Internet marketing sites, because they are more relevant.

How to get links to your site.
You can get lots of external links coming to your site by submitting your site and pages to all kind of directories and social networking sites.

Of course you can pay for them, but I wouldn’t recommend this since search engines, specifically Google, don’t like this artificial way of linking.

Or you could ask for links, which is what most website owners do and find time-consuming and complex.

There’s ‘link-bait’. That’s when you create content that website owners WANT to link to.

And of course you can submit articles to directories with a link to your pages at the bottom.

Or post valuable comments on blogs. Most of them allow you to include a link to your site and that’s another one-way back link. Note that most blog comments use the ‘nofollow’ attribute, meaning that no link juice is transferred in Google, but other search engines do.

Deep linking.
A common error lots of people make is to have external links link back to their home page only. Quite often using the same anchor text over and over again. That’s not good. Because you heavily rely on your internal linking structure to pass link juice and if that structure isn’t good or gets broken, you’re out of (search engine) traffic.

Instead, you should use deep links to pages buried inside your website. Obviously you chose the ones with the best content, leading visitors into your monetization process, whatever that may be.

And the very best anchor text for deep links should contain the main keyword that is used on the landing page.

Backlink Tools
There are many tools to check your inbound links and anchor texts.
Here’s one Daniel Scocco just discovered: Backlink Analyzer Tool.
If you’re using Firefox, install SearchStatus. It shows backward links along with a lot of other things.

So…

…yes, as you can getting one-way quality links to your site requires a lot of tedious, time-consuming work.
But it doesn’t have to be, because right now I’m testing a great system that does all of the things mentioned above…
…automatically!

Matching Names

It might seem obvious but if possible you should try to match the domain name with the name of your website. If you do this chances are much greater that your visitors remember the name and in the end return to your site.

Keyword in the Domain Name

First of all, think about what your most important keywords are and then start thinking about what the domain name could be. This could take some time but it will be well-worth the effort.

Keep it Short and Simple

If you are thinking about using a long domain name then you really should reconsider. Most people won’t remember the name of your site if the name is too long – keep it short and simple.
Of course, this shouldn’t be done at any price – don’t sacrifice your memorability and branding just to keep the name. Maybe a deliberation is at its place…

Also try to avoid using to many dashes in your domain name as this will make it harder for you to use it when you are meeting with people face to face. One is fine but if you have problems pronouncing it in less than a few seconds it’s probably best to rethink it.

Creative Names

If you can’t come up with a generic domain name you might want to think about picking a creative domain name. In fact, in many cases can this prove to be more successful – it all comes down to how creative you are.

To test if your chosen domain name is creative enough to be remember, simply mention it casually to a few friends and check back with them after a day or so. If they still remember the domain name – it’s for sure a keeper.

10 SEO Friendly Directory Submission Services

In 6 Great Free Resources, I mentioned Jeff Johnson’s free Underground Training Lab.

I studied the videos that come with this outstanding information. In particular I was very curious about directory submission services. Jeff recommends using them, up to 100-200 directory submissions for your traffic generating sites up to a 1,000 for your money making websites.

I don’t think there’s much value in submitting your site to thousands of directories, as most of them aren’t decently indexed by the search engines and lots of them do not pass link juice. Those that do are so crowded that listings are split into several pages, where you will end up at the last page without any significance.
Also, IN GENERAL, directories do not generate much traffic, as few people visit and use them.

But there are exceptions!
And prices are dirt cheap. In fact, some offer submissions services so cheap that it’s hard to believe they can make money from it.

So I did a search using Google and came up with 10 Directory Submission Services that seem worth to try out.

Let me first emphasize this: I haven’t used these submission services.
I’ve used services like this offered on forums by people I knew, but not from search results.

So I can’t recommend any of them. My intention simply is to provide an overview from which you can select your own resource and try it. No guarantees!

As you can see from the search, I added ’seo friendly’ to the term, meaning that I only wanted submissions to directories that pass (some) link juice.
I also added ‘manual’ to avoid directory submission services that use software to submit your sites.

The search produced thousands of results, of which I took those at the top that looked great and also included a submission report, or at least mentioned it. It seemed to me, that if a directory submission service is in the top 10 of a search result, they must be serious about their business. That does NOT mean there aren’t any other great ones, see below.

I skipped submission services offered on forums, because they mostly are individuals, not established companies. But that doesn’t mean they’re not good. Just try them and you may end up with a virtual assistant who does all the submissions for you.
The same applies for individuals that do submission services on freelance sites.

Also, I didn’t look specifically for services that submit to high pagerank directories, because these higher P-rankings mostly apply to the home page, not the listing pages. Besides that, IF a listing page has a high PR, most of the time it’s cluttered with thousands of links, reason to split the listings into multiple pages which results you ending up on the last page with no PR at all.

In general, I found that if you buy more, prices will go down, but I’ve also seen services, like Compbizz, where prices go up. I suggest you compare these offers thoroughly.

The time necessary to submit to the directories varies from just one day to months for large packages. Always check that.
If you see a submission service to 900 directories done in 1 day, there’s something fishy going on. Make sure there’s a solid relation between the submission time and the number of submissions you want.
That’s why I hesitated to include one of the services below. I found it hard to believe that they can submit your site to 100 directories manually for only 5 dollars, but it’s what they say they do.
Again, check thoroughly.

Sometimes more variables than I searched for apply, like

a certain number of submissions to PR5+ directories
spreading the submissions over a certain number of IP addresses
the opportunity to submit different titles and description of your link
deep linking (pages within your site)

Some services even guarantee their submissions. Therefore, you should take your time to compare all these different offers.

The aforementioned variables show, that cheaper doesn’t always mean better. It’s what you want that counts, as is the quality of the service (which, again, I did NOT test).

I also want to emphasize that the overview below is just a short selection of what I found. There are many, many more submission services and I may have missed some good ones. Use the Google search link above to find your own favorites.

Finally, if a submission service lists the directories they will submit to, it’s very wise to study that list, so you get an impression of the quality of the directories submitted to.

So do your own due diligence and be prepared to loose some money as I can’t guarantee the quality of the services listed below.

Testing Zemanta

I was testing Zemanta today on this blog (Wordpress).
That’s a Firefox add-on that “Have your browser understand what you are blogging about and suggest pictures, links, articles and tags to make your posts more vibrant” (from the Zemanta site).

All you have to do to install the add-on is click the download button at their site and install the plugin in your Firefox browser. Zemanta works with Wordpress.com, Blogger.com, Typepad.com, and self-hosted Wordpresses from version 2.0 onwards.

Whenever you’re writing a new blog post, Zemanta kicks in after typing about 300 characters and saving your post first. It shows at the top right hand side of your ‘Write’ area and it allows for a manual update.

Zemanta does a contextual comparison of the text in your post and image titles, image descriptions and the articles where the images were used in originally.
Zemanta also suggests article links, which they retrieve from their own database, where they index around 300 top media sources and numerous blogs of their users.

Next, this add-on provides you links, shown just below your ‘Write’ area, but most of them point to the Wikipedia site. I also found links to Wordpress, Blogger.com and Firefox.
And finally, Zemanta also suggests tags just below the Tags box. My guess is they take them from the suggested articles, but I’m not sure.

I wasn’t very impressed by the suggested pictures. They come from Wikimedia Commons, Flickr and various stock photo providers. For this post, most suggested pictures were logo’s from Wikimedia, Blogger, Wordpress and Firefox. You can add them by hovering your mouse over them and then click the plus sign that comes up.
The code to show these images was always added at the top of the post and looked so awful I didn’t even bother to add one. No images dimensions were included and all images are linked.

The same applies to the links that are suggested. For this post links to Firefox, Wordpress, Zemanta, Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia showed up. That could be improved.

The articles that Zemanta suggest can be useful. Because this post is about their service, a lot of the suggested articles linked back to their site, but while managing some older posts, I also saw links to John Chow, TechCrunch and other famous blogs. Clicking an article inserts it in your blog post like the one below, but again, the code is awful and it’s inserted at the bottom of your post, so I had to copy and paste the code to get it below this paragraph.

The tags can be a very useful addition too, but when you click them they’re not only added to your tags, but it also adds a ‘Zemified’ icon to your post, like the one you see at the bottom. Of course, you can delete this image, but I wouldn’t be surprised if you can use it in future to bookmark your posts.

All in all, I think Zemanta isn’t very useful yet, but it can be in the (near) future. It’s still under development, so I suggest you keep an eye on it.
