If you sell any product or if you want to build a great list, then you HAVE to follow up with your customers and subscribers.
In the first place -at the very least- you have to make sure the entire process was a satisfying for her, but in the long run you DO want to build an ongoing relationship with her, don’t you?

Email is a perfect way to do just that.

Lots of people fail to do follow up and many of them just because they have absolutely no idea how to do that. So, here are some guidelines.

Your follow up starts with your ‘thank you’ page.
On that page, you first re-assure your customer or subscriber that she has made the right choice. Remember that she just took a difficult decision, either sending you her money to buy your product or giving away her email address for a subscription. You just have to remove any nagging doubts that still play around in her mind.

Also, on that same page, you give her access to the product or freebie that you’ve promised, either directly by linking to it or by telling her she will find it in her welcome email that will arrive shortly in her email box.
Please understand what a great moment that is to point out to her that your emails may end up in a trash or spam folder. Therefore ask her to look there if she can’t find an email from you and have her whitelist your email address.

Then, your email follow up series -commonly called autoresponder series- kicks in, and fortunately, since you asked her to whitelist your address, it ends up in her IN-box.

In the first email that is sent immediately after your customer/subscriber took action, you welcome her and again re-assure her that she has made the right decision. This is important, since it takes away any doubts about that decision.
Of course you give her the download links again or a way to get them in case the download failed. Always offer help and support with downloads in your first email!

Make sure you mention the product or newsletter name again, so she can familiarize with that.
If you have some sort of affiliate program, you can mention that in here, but make it a soft pitch. Your customer/subscriber has to make sure she gets her stuff first.

In the second email, you start with mentioning the product or newsletter name, so your customer/subscriber knows what you’re talking about. Kind of branding on a small scale.
Remind her of what she can do with the downloaded files and how she should do it or use them.

If you have any additional resources, you can add them in here. Also mention your affiliate program if you have one, so she knows she can make money using your download file. That makes her want to move faster.

In your third email you can recommend other products, resources, membership sites or free newsletters that you have. Kind of cross promotion, but still keep it a very soft pitch.
Also, do ask if they had the time to try and work with your product, resources or freebies. Remind them of the benefits and kindly ask for a testimonial, that includes the problem she had and how your product has solved that.

Finally, the fourth email you send should contain nothing else than your personal help.
Offer them your personal email instead of help@yourdomain.com or support@yourdomain.com. Let them know only valuable customers or subscribers have that email address and only they are allowed to use it to get in touch with you.

Don’t underestimate this email. I learned this from Paul Myers who reports huge response rates on later emails. That’s exactly my personal experience too. Most of the responses I get are based on this message. Oh, and take your time to answer these emails personally! Give it an extra personal touch, so they know it doesn’t come from the email follow up series.

Make it as personal as possible. If you use a great email follow up management system (yes, here we go again, but it’s just an indispensable resource!), it will allow you to include their first name. Use that!
But also make it short. No selling, no nothing. Just personal help, personal email address.
Build a relationship.

In the next emails, before pitching other products, be sure to get a testimonial or case study back from your customer. Include this in your marketing materials so your credibility will boost.

Take it from there.
At least, your email follow up series have a great start.

Any comments on this?

Are you building a list? If yes, great! If not, why not?

In fact, if you don’t build a list, regardless the marketing strategy you’re following, you’re nuts. Why?

Because -and that’s the main reason for list building- you want to establish and continue a personal and eventually profitable relationship between you and the person interested in your list topic(s).

Please read that again. Emphasis is on ‘establish’ and ‘continue’.
In other words, you need to be in close contact with your targeted audience. Because apparently you know something they don’t and they just LOVE to learn from you.

Establish is difficult, Continue is even harder. I could elaborate on this, but it’s not what I want to convey in this post (hang on, that great viral list building trick is coming!). Besides, there are great list building experts who can tell you exactly how to build huge lists. Paul Myers is one of them. His Ebook ‘The Amazing List Machine‘ is excellent! No fluff, no filler, just over 70 pages with high value content. Check it out.

I presume you use a confirmation procedure while building your list (a.k.a. double opt-in). It’s the only safe way to build a list.
In that case, the subscriber to your list is a special person for you. After all, she requested and confirmed to receive email messages from you about a specific topic at specific times.

That implies that you have to know and specify what exactly they will receive (topics) and when (frequency). If you don’t have a specific frequency, tell them, so they know!

That also implies that it’s best for you to know exactly what you want to achieve with your list. That’s where lots of people fail. After -finally- deciding to build a list, they just start.

Take Caroline Middlebrook for instance.
Caroline wants to build a list and she’s preparing a Stumble Upon E-course for it. That’s great and I’m sure many people will sign up there.

Only…
she’s not sure what she wants to do with her list.

That’s not good.
Because eventually she will want to monetize that list. She doesn’t have a product yet and there aren’t any suitable affiliate programs to promote with that topic. So what to do? Should she only give away free content?

Maybe, but …

… let’s surprise her with this great viral list building method.
While she can’t monetize her list for the moment, she can set another goal where she still can profit from her list building efforts and at the same time build a huge list and even satisfy her subscribers and build a great relationship with them too.

Here’s how this viral list building trick works.

First, she signs up with a reputable list management service, like Aweber which I highly recommend.

Next, she creates her sign up form. Easy to do with the instructions given at Aweber. Obviously that form will contain at least an email address and maybe a name.
But she should include at least one other field…

…in Caroline’s case: a Stumble Upon account name!
Since she’s going to write an e-course about Stumble Upon her list building goal for the moment will be to add as many Stumble friends as possible.

That field should be a hidden one (not visible in the form) and the default value should be her SU account name. That value is added to the database in her Aweber account (in a variable like SUname) and she can use that data in her messages!!!

Because in her E-course, she can include her Stumble Upon link in several messages like this:

http://{SUname}.stumbleupon.com/

where the Aweber system replaces {SUname} by the stored value (=Carolines account name).

Are you with me this far?
All she did until now was setting up a form using a variable containing her account name instead of a direct link to http://cmiddlebrook.stumbleupon.com/, but the end result in her messages was the same.

Now here’s what she does to go viral…

…she can offer her great E-course to others, for instance to me so I can please my visitors by providing her E-course.

“But why” I hear you ask,
“WHY should I send my visitors over to HER E-course?”

Because…

…she simply offers HER form to me and allows me to REPLACE her SU-account name in the hidden field by MINE. Now, when someone subscribes through my form, in the message series they are referred to MY Stumble Upon account and they become MY friends.
All I have to do is put up the form and promote it.

Are you beginning to see the beauty of this viral list building technique?

So far, here’s what we have now:

Lots of satisfied subscribers as they can take a high value free E-course and learn a lot

Satisfied Case, because I’m providing an excellent course to my visitors WITHOUT lifting a finger (except promotion) PLUS I get many friends added to my SU account.

Very satisfied Caroline, because she builds her list much faster than she can do alone PLUS … read on…

OF COURSE she can offer her course to others too, which only increases her subscriber base. It’s a simple and very easy form of list building joint venture! Heck, she can even include her offer in her message series!

And OF COURSE she can add other hidden fields for other Social Bookmarking sites (which she mentions in her messages) and have all subscribers add her there too.

And OF COURSE, if appropriate, she can include an occasional link (NOT to be replaced) to an affiliate program like for instance Aweber to promote that and earn recurring commissions. Thus she can still monetize her list.

And finally, if she includes more social bookmarking fields, she can easily broaden her list building topic (provided she explicitly mentions that in her sign up form or messages) to Web2.0 issues. And isn’t that a topic that can be monetized?

There you have it. My viral list building trick.
What’s you take? Interesting?

Last week I got a unique message from one of my new subscribers.

“I just got an e-mail from you and it stated that I signed up with you as an experienced marketer.
Well, I’m not. I’m still looking for something that I am comfortable with and how to do it.”

What happened was that he selected the wrong marketing experience option when signing up. It was the first time in all these years this happened and I changed it immediately.

You see, when subscribers sign up for my newsletter Affordable Online Strategies, they are qualified BEFORE the hit the submit button. Because the first thing I ask them is their Internet marketing experience level.

Depending on their choice, the rest of the page below the fold shows different content and they are sent to an appropriate email follow up series (autoresponder).

That means, that newbies receive different messages than intermediate and seasoned marketers. I start explaining common Internet strategies, techniques and terms first. My subscribers just love that!

Thus, while the content of my newsletter is about Internet marketing in general, my autoresponder series are more targeted and tries to educate subscribers depending on their marketing experience level.

It’s how I avoid frequently asked basic questions like what’s a host, what’s ftp, what’s html and so on.

Of course I do occasionally poll my readers, but each poll is targeted towards their experience.

Since I use Aweber, I can also create sub-groups, based on the date they signed up or the last follow up message they received. That allows me to shift the ‘1 year newbies’ to the intermediate group and ‘1 year old intermediates’ to the seasoned subscribers.

So, whenever I poll or send broadcasts, I have all the options I need to target my subscribers as much as possible.

I think, despite the decreasing opening rates of email messages in general, that’s one of the reasons why my emails are quite successful. I use the same strategy in other niches, with comparable results.

Of course there’s no need to apply such strategies whenever you’re offering a specific product, because that by itself can qualify your subscribers.

I mean, if you for instance offer something like “Software To Easily Rewrite Articles and PLR Content“, you more or less know what kind of people will take a look at it.

On other occasions, such as “How To Create InfoProducts Fast“, you have to qualify your targeted audience in the sales page.

But it’s a whole other matter if you create a squeeze page for a general newsletter. If you don’t qualify your potential subscriber BEFORE they sign up, you have a lot of work to do.

Think about it.
And let me know your opinion. Comment below.

Lots of email marketers and newsletter publishers become more and more frustrated by decreasing email deliverability. They notice that lots of their messages do not arrive in the recipients IN-box.

There can be many reasons for that. Here’s a nice article that sums it up quite well: Email deliverability: what’s it all about?

But you always should start with yourself, because you can drastically increase your profits by improving the delivery of your messages. After all, the more are getting delivered, the more chances on making sales or at least satisfying your subscribers and customers by delivering high quality information.

I’m using Aweber for broadcasts and they have some great tips to increase deliverability. They have a Free Email Deliverability Guide For Our Blog Readers!
While their deliverability figures may not be objective, they also have a service in place to monitor the delivery of emails. Although I don’t use that one, it gives me confidence that their results stay high.

Lyris also publishes a guide called The Opt-In Email Marketer’s Checklist for Inbox Delivery.

But even then you can walk into a nasty pitfall as well known marketer Mark Hendricks found out at watchout for this email deliverability trap.
So, before including someone’s website in your email broadcasts, check the site out at SURBL+ Checker Query Results

Another issue is the use of HTML emails. Personally I always use flat text and send my readers to a webpage as soon as possible to avoid filtering of my messages. Because HTML code can affect email deliverability

If you manage your own email, it’s always wise to check your own reputation when it comes to email marketing. Because there are three metrics that make your E-mail reputation.

If you’re into email marketing and building lists, then you really should set up your whole lead generation process carefully, so you will get your email address whitelisted.

Give the whole process the attention it deserves, so you can use it to its fullest extent. Here’s another great resource to start your email deliverability process.

Co-registration is about referring subscriptions synchronous with a different registration process.

In general, when a visitor signs up for a free subscription, on the “thank-you page” he or she is given the opportunity to subscribe to other offers.

The main problem is how you find other publishers who you could land a co-reg joint venture with.

You could do this is by looking in search engines and directories. Another way is to sign up for co-registration services on the Net.

But the very best way to set up a list building JV is to look inside your own network.
After all, there are the people that you already know and trust. And probably you also already know what exactly they are doing and if their niche ties in neatly with yours.

If there’s someone in your network with an newsletter that is similar to yours but does not necessarily compete, then that would be a perfect nominee. Again, this proves it’s very important who you know and who knows you!

Co registration leads that are targeted will be valuable additions to your lists. Many of the co registration leads might very well be your customers for life.

Here is how you can implement the concept of co-registration:

After you have approached another publisher with a co-registration arrangement, you both agree to become partners.

Each partner shows the other publisher’s subscription offer on the “thank you” page that is brought up after a visitor subscribes to the first publisher’s content.

When the visitor agrees to subscribe to the co-reg offer, the subscription is dealt with according to the instructions that are on the e-mail sign-up form.

Ideally, both partners try to send the same amount of subscribers to one another.

Each partner keeps track of the results and either makes adjustments or discontinues the partnership.

This can be done over and over again with many other publishers.

Now, setting this up requires software. That is, if you don’t use the co-reg services on the Net.

I’m not quite sure about this, but this software may be a huge problem. Lots of people really would like to use co-registration, but just don’t know how to manage the whole process.

So, my question is: do you use co-registration and if not, why not?
And a second one: if you had some powerful software do manage co-regs, would you use this list building strategy?

Please post your comments. When useful, you’ll get a link back to your site!

I received an email today that started as follows (I used copy and paste):

“Dear Case,
My head is still spinning. My friend in LA just tod me that websites need articles so bad write now if you have a 6th grade education you can bank 300-400 bones a day just scratching out OK content.”

Well, that one caught my eye immediately.

I mean, apart from the words that were used. As you may know, English isn’t my first language, but I can do better than that, I hope.

Assuming that ‘bones’ was the slang equivalent of dollars (I couldn’t find that one in my most used, free desktop software WordWeb), I just got curious as to how you can make $400 a day ‘just scratching out OK content’.

You see, the subject line of the email was: “Case, Can You Write a Stupid Blog? Then Get Paid”. The rest of the email said:

“They don’t really even care how good it is. Thats the weird part. It’s just filler to build up their sites.
If you really can write you can make double that. But even novice like me can make as much as an RN at the kitchen table.
Check out this full story.”

And then a tiny url link.

Yeeeeeehaaa, “I can make double that”.
I guess, that means double the 300-400 bones, which I still think are dollars.

Eight Hundred Bones huh?

Right now I’m involved in Willie Crawford’s Inner Circle to create an Ebook on how to make $100 a day by people who actually DO that.
Eight Hundred Bones is eight times more! That’s not bad for one day. Certainly if you only have to write eh… well, let’s call it ‘filler’.

Are you getting suspicious yet?

Ah ah, not me! I clicked the link.

You then see the service’s home page. It says
Get Paid To Write Simple Articles $25-40
Get Paid To Post In Blogs $15-$50
$450 Per Story.
Get Started NOW

The tab links at their home page do not work. The only thing you can do there is Step 1 from 3: Create Your Login Info.

So …. I did Step 1! Anxious to get in.

The next page says that my profile is created and tells me how much I can earn. Up to SIX figures and some members make $250 a day working only a few hours.
To me that seems hard to do if an article only pays ten bucks. That means writing 25 articles in a couple of hours. Now, I realize I’m slow, but that seems quite an accomplishment to me.

On top of that, it’s still far away from the 800 bones! Maybe bones aren’t dollars?

Now, making $250 a day doesn’t create a SIX figure income, not even in a year working EVERY day. So to generate a SIX figure income, you have to work much harder. And crank out more articles than the 25 already.

Now I am getting suspicious!

But then, suddenly, there’s a paragraph that asks me if I qualify to be a Free Lance Home Worker. And that one seriously aroused a deep feeling of anger (isn’t that the political correct term for getting pissed off?).

Because…. I can’t qualify! You have to be

“…a native English speaker. It doesn’t matter if you are a College or even a High school drop-out. As long as English is your first language then you can make money on the internet writing!”

Dammit, !@#$%^&, I can write better emails than those few lines I got from a native speaker and I don’t qualify!

I should have known better. I first must learn to write emails like the one above. Maybe then I’ll qualify.
It’s back to my home courses.

Last week I was a victim of a joe job.
That’s where a spammer uses your domain name in the from-field of a spam broadcast. They use software to insert that data.

You will notice by the bounces emails you receive. Emails that I’ve never written are sent to address that I do not know about. Yet, when such an address doesn’t exists, I will get a notice for that.
That’s how you discover how someone abused your domain name.

I immediately informed my host and my registrar, just to be sure that they wouldn’t delete my accounts. Doing that isn’t really necessary if they are good, because from the email headers they already can tell I didn’t send the spam emails. Just wanted to be sure.

As a result of that abuse, I had to close many email accounts at that domain.
Before doing that, I wanted to change the email addresses of newsletters and customer lists that I was subscribed to that I received on those addresses. Otherwise, all publishers of these ezines would receive bounce messages. Besides that, I also wanted to keep most subscriptions.

To my surprise, many of the messages that are sent to you do NOT contain a link where you can change your email address. They all contained a link to UNsubscribe, but that wasn’t my goal.

Strangely enough, Email Aces, a great autoresponder service, doesn’t support that either. Once in the ‘update’-section you can change all your data, except your email address. I understand they are careful, but changing your email addy, if necessary followed by a confirmation email, should be possible.

Now, you could unsubscribe and subscribe again for a newsletter if you can find the subscription page, but being on a customer list that is sending updates and new releases is a whole other matter.

So, I sent an email to those that didn’t offer the possibility to change an email address, using the ‘reply’ address included in the message IF that was possible. Some of them have a ‘no-reply’ address in there. And some of these sent you to a support form where I had to submit a ticket.

I’ve done that all and most changed my address.

As a spin-of of such an exercise, you can immediately recognize who has the best customer support service. If you get an email back within the hour, containing:

“Hi Case,
No worries, it’s all been updated!
Best wishes,”

then you know this publisher is on top of things.

Some don’t even bother to answer. Or maybe they just didn’t get the email. Ah well, makes my inbox somewhat less crowded.
But I still think it’s strange.
What’s your take on this? Submit your comments.

PS
That friendly email came from Sam Stephens, owner of DLGuard, a splendid piece of software that guards all your downloads. And, as said above, Sam’s support is really outstanding. You really should check it out!

Today I found a few more phishing messages in my inbox. My PayPal account was compromised and I had to log in to change passwords. Yeah, right!

I’m using Mailwasher for my POP mail. Since it doesn’t display images, I can immediately see the URL I’m sent to. And although such URL often includes the term paypal, it’s always a variant. That makes it easy to detect this kind of scam.

My second line of defense is my email program: Pegasus. Great program, lots of filtering features and no images to display. Compared to other email software it’s a bit basic without fancy bells and whistles, but it does a great job.

Finally, I never click a link concerning PayPal, payment systems or any other bank account.
I always type in the URL and explore the site. Seems quite safe to me.

Nevertheless….

I just read a post at the Warrior forum from Gary Ambrose, owner of Email Aces, another great autoresponder service.

Gary titled his message
‘<a href="http://www.Warriorforum.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=184138" target="_blank">Major Phishing Warning – Take This Seriously …‘
and if Gary posts messages like this, you’d better take them serious. He knows what he’s talking about. Check it out.

Firefox also recognizes that phishing really IS a serious problem. They just posted a message on their blog: Firefox has declared war on phishing and the Firefox community is its army!!!.

So, I was wondering…

How do you detect phishing messages?
Are you aware of the phenomenon in the first place? If so, how do you protect yourself from being scammed?
Let me know by posting your comments.

You must have customers to sell your services and products. To increase your profits, you also must turn them into repeat super-customers.

In Internet marketing, the simplest way to do this is by a high value content newsletter. Content sells, no doubt about that. Valuable and useful content builds credibility and trust, and in due time turns your customer from a alien into a friend.

All you need to start an online newsletter is is an autoresponder. It’s as easy as that. I use Aweber for my newsletter. You should promote your newsletter on every page of your website, in articles you publish, on traffic exchanges, on forums, on your business card and in your email signature. Your list will grow gradually if you reliably perform these marketing tasks.

In your newsletter you must provide valuable and informative content. It should be useful, relevant and interesting.
If you want your subscribers to read your newsletter and (sooner or later) buy from you, then by all means do not offer them junk, unless you’re a masochist.
Do not send them advertisements disguised as “articles.” They can smell it, even before opening the email. And don’t send only solo ads.
You rather research topics for your newsletter and compose quality articles. Subscribers will buy from you if they are impressed with your newsletter. It only will take time to build trust.

There are three phases to this process:

Donate Now!

1) Get a prospect
2) Convert that prospect into a customer and
3) Convert that customer into a super-customer.
Your newsletter will help you accomplish all three tasks, although to get a prospect you also need a sales or squeeze page.

If you’re generating targeted traffic to your site, your visitors will be interested in the valuable content you offer them. To hold their interest, and to keep your name and products in front of their eyeballs, you offer a free newsletter. Even if it’s only a simple monthly newsletter.

If they subscribe, you can try to build a relationship with the help of your content.
Most people don’t purchase something the first time it’s offered, but as they come to know you, your valuable content and your products, they sooner or later become more willing to purchase. That’s how you can convert more prospects into customers.

Likewise, you can turn those customers into super-customers. If the product or service they purchased from you was superior, you have established even more credibility with them. They then will make repeat purchases, or join your membership site you offer and sign up for your affiliate program.

THAT’S how you turn prospects into customers and customers into super-customers!

“Don’t Right-Size. Bite-Size”
===========================

Forget writing in pre-measured doses. Skip the artificial limitations on length, and focus on clarity. But don’t make your content so heavy that it wears your readers down.

If you have to take more words to make your point, do it. But break it down into bite-sized chunks. One concept or topic at a time.

If you’ve been subscribed for more than a few issues, you’ve probably noticed that I use a lot of indents, put a blank space at the beginning of every line, and use those four dots (….)to break the newsletter into smaller sections.

And I rarely use long paragraphs.

White space makes reading easier. Short sections don’t just make it feel faster, they emphasize the end of each point, so people can stop and digest a section before moving on to the next. That focuses the mind, and clarifies the flow of ideas.

It provides a visible structure for your outline.

That all helps to make your content more interesting.

You might also be surprised to find out how much easier it makes writing.

Everyone wins. We like that.

“Edit With Care”
==============

Once you’ve finished a piece, set it aside for a while. Comeback and re-read it. Edit it lightly.

I’ve noticed over the years that the articles I worked on the hardest and polished the most got the least feedback. The ones I wrote and just spell-checked and sent out got the biggest responses. One of the most well-received articles I ever sent out was, in my opinion, terrible in terms of the writing. The ideas were great, but the writing… Not so much.

For a long time I thought that was because people were responding to the casual feel of the articles. I recently came to a very different conclusion, based on a number of those things happening fairly close after each other.

The difference was that the ones I just wrote and sent out were pieces I had to write. They weren’t part of any planned pattern or any market response. They just wouldn’t leave me alone until I got them out of my head and into someone else’s hands.

They demanded to be written.

….

That may sound odd, but anyone who writes much knows what I mean. It’s just something that happens. And it’s a lot more work to fight them than to write them.

When those things start gnawing at you, write them down. There’s a reason the ideas keep coming back to you and asking to be let loose. They’ll usually resonate with other people for the same reason they wouldn’t let you alone.

That’s your most powerful content.

That’s the sort of thing that goes viral. That’s the kind of content that creates raving fans.

Here’s a secret that even most writers don’t know: If you focus on pushing a lot of value through the pages, making it interesting and useful and relevant… You can create that same feeling and that same response.

You’ll enjoy writing more, your readers will enjoy your content more, and you can thumb your nose at the arrogant twits who think we’re all too stupid to pay attention for more than30 seconds.

That’s a win all the way around.

Except for the twits.

….

Well, well, well. If you’ve made it this far, you are a patient and generous soul, and I thank you for it.

I’d like to impose on you for one more thing, if I might. Iwant to be able to show the “Prophets of Dumb” that people really do read more than tiny tidbits.

Just hit this link and send the email that comes up…

mailto:editor@talkbiz.com?Subject=I_Made_It

… or hit reply, and put “I Made It” in as the subject line.

And I’m sure I can find something cool and useful for everyone else, too.
