The number of blogs for business is growing rapidly and more and more businesses are conducted online.

It’s a logical evolution.
If your blog can generate a lot of traffic, your products and services can reach the whole wide world.

Which is of the utmost importance, because more and more people get access to the Internet and that’s where your potential customers are.

Today, and in the years to come, you can use your blogs for business to promote your products and yourself. Last week, we’ve seen that starting a blog isn’t for everyone, but blogs for business are an outstanding vehicle to run your online ventures.

Let me give you some valuable tips that you can use in your online ventures.

Try to get valuable backlinks

You have to generate backlinks in order to promote your blog for business. Instead of the old fashioned link exchanges, your blog posts should allow for contextual back links, naturally weaven into your content.

Yes, you thus may give away valuable link juice, but you can also expect to get some of it back, especially if your content is great. Linking out attracts the attention of others and if they like what they see, they may send you some traffic in future. Therefore you shouldn’t be afraid to link to valuable resources.

Use the right keywords.

Use the free Google keyword tool to discover keywords that are in demand and then check how many competitors you have for these keywords. You can do that by simply entering the keyword into Google, preceded by intitle:”. That will show how many others are targeting that keyword.

Of course high demand and low competition keywords are the best to target. Take some time to find good ones. That could result in your blogging for business placed among the top search results.

Keyword density.

Use your keywords in the title, description, tags and a few times in your content. Experiment with the number of occurrences of keywords in your content.

I don’t know how often they should occur, but watch the results of the other sites that you’ve found when checking competition. Compare their density with yours. A great tool to do this is the SEO Quake add-on for Firefox that shows you a density overview of each page you investigate right away.

Post regularly

Very important if you use blogs for business. There’s no place on the Net for irregular bloggers, so post frequently if you want your efforts to be rewarded.

Establish reputation

If your content can grab attention and you post oftentimes, you will be able to build report for your online business and showcase your expertise.

Don’t make the mistake to post about non-business topics. Your in business! For others it may be a way to share their personal experiences and everyday life. That’s not what you want to do. You need to consider the interests of online researches and your readers.

That’s another reason why you should post frequently: to avoid that your customers and readers will forget you or your business!

Stay on track and post interesting facts, tips, tricks, news, faq’s, experiences, testimonials and anything else directly related to your business.

Those are some important tips that you can use for blogging. If you want to blogs for business, use them to learn how to make highly effective blogs.

To make your online venture a success, blogs for business is one of the most effective means.

Thousands pop up every day.

I know, because I get many comments from people who just started their own blog and want to pass some link juice to it.

First thing I do when checking them out is read the ‘About’ page. In most cases, this page contains the standard Wordpress text! They don’t even bother to change it.

Well, it isn’t THAT easy. It really takes some extra effort to start your own blog. And that’s exactly what todays guest post is all about.
It’s written by Melissa Tamura.

Melissa is a content writer and as such connected to the Zen College Life (ZCL), dedicated to life hacking and getting most out of college.

In today’s post Melissa shows her skills and shares her knowledge.
Enjoy!

To Start Your Own Blog Isn’t for Everyone – 4 Reasons

It’s a pretty common belief that blogging is a simple process and that it’s easy to start your own blog.

However, those who have in the past know that the process is usually anything but simple. It requires time, energy, dedication and a willingness to work regularly. In many ways, blogs become mini (or major) businesses.

If you’ve been thinking to start your own blog, it’s good to keep in mind that blogging is meant for a special breed of people.

To gauge if it’s a good fit for you, check out some reasons that blogging simply isn’t for everyone.

Not Everyone Can Write
You’re probably asking yourself “How hard can blogging be?”
Well, there’s no doubt that blogging language is much more relaxed than what you would find in a literature book; however, it does require that you know basics of the English language.

In other words, if you can’t spell (and don’t know how to use spell check, a dictionary and a thesaurus), don’t write a blog.
If you don’t understand grammar, don’t write a blog.
And if slang is your preference when writing, don’t write a blog.

Believe me, your audience will notice every error you make and take pride in embarrassing the keyboard right from under your fingertips.

Coming Up with Topics Isn’t Always Easy
Another misconception of blogging is that coming up with topics is easy.
If you’re not good at coming up with topics for your blog on a regular basis, blogging may not be for you.

The trick is that when you come up with topics, they need to be weird, funny, controversial, or image, video and celebrity-driven to draw in and keep your audience. Also, you have to be good at coming up with titles, something that’s not easy for even the pros to do.

Sensitivity Isn’t Allowed
If sticks, stones and words hurt you then don’t even consider to start your own blog.
As a blogger, you have to be willing to step out of the box, voice your own opinions and be prepared for opposite opinions, or even a little backlash for your ideas.

Some people like to anonymously show up in blogs and harass the writers. So if you’re not confident in your opinions, you may as well leave them in your brain.

Drawing an Audience Takes Work
You may think that the minute you publish your first post, the audience will come running.
The truth is, even if you have 1,000 online friends that you fraternize with regularly, you’ll be lucky if 50 show up to read your blog every day.

What prospective bloggers don’t realize is that individuals who read specific blogs are drawn in by the topics they get to read and discuss. Unfortunately, your friends don’t all have the same interest.

This means it’s up to you to join chatrooms, forums, social networking site groups and anything else dedicated to your blog’s theme. However, with hard work and lots of word of mouth, you just may be able to draw in the audience that will make your blog a success.

Let’s talk today about how to get more people to read and comment on your blog, shall we?

I won’t do the talking though. Instead, I’ll use this outstanding guest post by Andrew Rondeau.

I met Andrew on the Internet, found his bio impressive and we talked on some occasions and became marketing buddies.

Apart from being a great (online and offline) marketer, Andrew Rondeau also is the author of the free guide “Build Your Own Profitable Blog in 45 Minutes”.
You can grab your complimentary copy at http://www.webuildyourblog.com today and start making a blog income.

That shows that Andrew knows exactly what he’s talking about, so I’ll hand it over to him. Here goes.

How Do I Get People To Read And Comment On My Blog?

You blog at least 3 times a week. Your posts are informative and full of advice.

But you get no comments. Well some comments but no comments that are worth mentioning. No comments that start the engagement, the conversation.

You get comments like “nice post! Thanks” and that’s it.

But what you want is more readers to read your posts and feel keen enough to comment on them.

Attracting comments comes a long time after getting readers.

I’ve never completed any research but let’s take the mighty ProBlogger.net. Owner, Darren Rowse has over 132,000 RSS subscribers and on average he receives anything between 50 and 200 comments per post. That’s between 0.04 and 0.15% of his RSS subscribers are commenting. Add in the number of visitors he gets who are not RSS subscribed and the percentages are even worse.

Let’s take another popular blogger, Yaro Starak. Yaro has almost 83,000 RSS subscribers. He averages anything between 30 and 150 comments. His percentages range from 0.04 and 0.18. Again very small.

So to get one comment you need quite a lot of visitors/readers.

So how do you get more comments?

Giving a catchy title
Most of the time, we give more attention to the blog content but not to its title.
If prospective ‘commenters’ see a boring title, they assume that the content inside will also be boring and therefore, they certainly won’t comment. Put some effort in and give your blog post a catchy title.

Knowing your readers
Before posting on your blog, you should understand what your readers’ problems are, what they expect from your blog and what questions they might ask.
After deciding all this, start giving possible answers on your blog so that more and more visitors read the whole blog post. By reading the whole blog post they may be more inclined to comment.

Write about your experiences
A lot of my comments come from blog posts where I share my own experiences and failings. Don’t be concerned about sharing your mistakes. We all make them and writing about them makes you more personable and human.

Inviting comments
You may feel that readers will comment only if they feel strongly enough to do so. But this is not absolutely true. It is a fact that if you ask your readers to comment on your blog, they will be more inclined to do so.
The best approach for me is to finish the blog post off with a question. If you don’t ask, you don’t get!

Responding to the existing comments
If someone has commented on your blog, then do not forget to respond to it. In this way, your readers will understand that you always pay attention and you are willing to engage in a conversation with the readers.
If you wish to grow your comments and readership section, then the first thing you should do is to get involved with your readers and pay attention to whatever they have to say.

Many bloggers ask me how to get more readers for their blogs.

While I was thinking about writing a post about the topic, Debbie Dragon hit me with a guest post request, sending a contribution about getting more blog readers.
That’s what you’ll find below. I’ll let Debbie do the talking.
Enjoy!

- – -

It’s far easier to set up a blog and write for it than it is to find readers for that blog.

There are hundreds of thousands of blogs who’s only reader is the blog writer – and that’s because most people who set up their blog have very little knowledge about search engine optimization strategies and other methods of finding blog readers.

For beginners or blogs which are not intended to make money – hiring an SEO company can be too expensive. Luckily, there are several methods of increasing your blog traffic that won’t cost you anything more than your time.

Update Your Blog Regularly
A key element to getting your blog indexed by the search engines (and otherwise increase your chances of people searching the internet stumbling across your site in their online journeys) is to provide new content for your blog on a regular basis.

Blogs are typically quicker to get indexed than a traditional website, because the search engines see a blog as providing regularly updated, fresh content.
Post at least twice a week to keep your site updated.

Participate in Blog Carnivals
Part of boosting your internet presence is to receive incoming links to your blog.
Links allow people to click on them and come to your site; and they also play a role in how a search engine determines where to put your site in the search listings when people are searching keywords related to your blog topic.

One method of increasing your blog’s incoming links is to participate in blog carnivals.
Carnivals are similar to an index or table of contents in a magazine or book in that they are a listing of blog articles all on a particular theme containing a link to the full text of each article on the blogger’s own website.
For every blog carnival you participate and get included in, you receive a link to your site.

When people reading the carnival post like the topic of your article, they’ll click the link to read it (therefore giving you a new blog reader); and if you participate on a weekly basis you’ll start to see your blog readership increase due to these new incoming links.

Make Use of Article Directories
Another way to increase incoming links to your site and gain new readers to your blog is to write content that can be published on article directories.

There are thousands of article directories online that allow writers to submit articles on any topic and include an author’s resource box, or byline, which includes a link back to your site.

Each time you publish an article on a directory, you get a new incoming link to your site – and since article directories exist to provide reprintable content for website owners, each time your articles are reprinted on another site you receive another incoming link to your blog.

The most effective way to use article directories is to write articles on topics similar to what you write about on your blog. That way, when people are browsing content to reprint, only sites that are on similar topics as your own will find your articles and want to reprint them.

You get your link on sites with related content (great for SEO) and also increases the chances that readers of the site reprinting your content will click on your link to learn more about you and what you write about.

- – -

Debbie Dragon is a freelance writer providing articles for Trace Media – an SEO New York company specializing in getting websites up, and making sure they perform to their full potential through the use of search engine optimization services.

There you have Debbie’s advice.
What methods do you use to get more blog readers?

Wordpress 2.7 ‘Coltrane’ was released today. I noticed when I logged in today. ‘Coltrane’ is Max Mullenwegs (the Wordpress founder) favorite saxophone player.

So I upgraded immediately (in under 1 minute using the Automatic Upgrade Plugin) and I liked what I saw.

As promised, there’s a completely new interface which I like. Comprehensive and conveniently arranged.

There are a lot of new features and improvements, like writing new posts and commenting right from the dashboard. Heck, you can even re-arrange the dashboard and put your favorite menu parts on top of it.

One of the other new features is automated upgrades, so after upgrading to Wordpress 2.7 there’s no need for the extra plugin mentioned above any more. I like that very much.

There’s more, just watch the video below that explains most of it.

And of course Lorelle, the Wordpress expert, has more information that you may want to check out.

I urge you to upgrade as soon as possible. It’s very worth while.
Let me know what you think of it.

There’s a lot of attention lately for Wordpress security issues. Blogs get hacked quite often and on forums I see a lot of desperate cries for help. I know how it feels. This blog got hacked once and it’s a real pain in the butt.

Before I go into some Wordpress security issues, let me emphasize I’m NOT an expert on this issue. Far from it. If you really want an expert to help you out with security issues, get in touch with my friend Tom Brownsword. He’s a certified security expert!

Again, I’m certainly not, but I certainly took some measures for my Wordpress security. Let me share them with you.

One of the first things you absolutely MUST do is change your password into something nobody can guess. A random set of at least 10 characters, some in capitals and including at least one special character, like !, ?, and @.

The downside is that these passwords are hard to remember and you shouldn’t store them electronically. So, what I do is think of a name of a far relative consisting of at least 10 characters. Then I change one of the letters into a digit and another one into a special character. The funny thing is, that, after I’m done, I can still recognize the name, but it now makes a great password.

The second security measure you should take is place an index file in every directory that hasn’t one. I usually redirect them to the home page of my blog, but you can also redirect them to a sales page or whatever.
Since Wordpress uses PHP, I always use index.php and the content is really simple:

<?php
header(‘Location: http://www.affordable-internet-marketing.com/’);
?>

You can also use javascript to redirect:

<script language=”javascript”>
window.location.replace(“http://www.affordable-internet-marketing.com/”);
</script>

Or, if you’re familiar with the concept, you can use a .htaccess file do accomplish the same. Some control panels provide this option.

Your next Wordpress security measure would be to make sure the permissions settings of your files and directories are all right.

This is a bit of technical matter, but basically you can set the rights to read (r), write (w) and execute (x) files for yourself as the owner, for the group the files belongs to and for other users.

Permission to read a file has a value of 4, write has a value of 2 and the execute value is 1. If you see a value of 7, it means that there is a permission to read, write and execute, 6 is only read and write permission.
Since permissions have to specified for all three groups, a permission setting always consists of 3 digits. 644 means that you have the rights to read and write and all others can only read. This is a safe permission setting. 777 would mean, that everyone has the rights to read, write and execute files. That’s a highly dangerous setting as you allow others to manipulate your files.

Sometimes, for instance when you install a script, you’ll be asked to set permissions to 777 in order for the install program to create and write files. Remember to always, always set permissins back to 644 when you’re done installing. Plus you should delete the install script.

You can set permissions using the CHMOD command. It’s available in the better FTP programs that allow you to upload files to your server. Almost all Control Panels also include a way to set permissions. Use these resources to check all your file permissions. The third digit should almost always be a 4!

Another Wordpress security measure is to limit access to your admin area. You can do that using a htaccess file in the admin area. It should contain a deny for all and an allow for your IP address.

There’s a Wordpress Security plugin that can help you detect vulnerabilities in your Wordpress blog. I just installed it and found 1 minor error in my permission settings as you can see in the image above.
So it’s been useful for me already. Consider installing it.

Don’t forget to always upgrade to the latest Wordpress version. I think this is included in Wordpress version 2.7, so you may need this plugin only once again.

Finally, check out this great article by Aaron Wall: New Wordpress Hacking Strategy.

Yaro Starak opens his Blog Mastermind program again.

Blog Mastermind is an outstanding online blogging course allowing you to make money with your blog.

It consists of a 27 part step-by-step training program delivered in weekly lessons, a series of audio interviews with professional bloggers like Darren Rowse, Brian Clark and Andy Wibbels, personal advice on his forum and lots of blog reviews.

Just in case you don’t know Yaro Starak, he’s one of the top A bloggers.
Other A-bloggers promote Yaro’s Blog Mastermind blogging course. And Yaro has other great partners – guys like Mike Filsaime, Rich Schefren and Michael Cheney – who promote this great course too.

They do that, because Blog Mastermind is one of the very best blogging resources on the Net.

And that’s no wonder, since Yaro knows exactly what works and what doesn’t.
He came from making $ 5,000 a month blogging part time to a steady $10,000 to $20,000 each and every month.
His blog, entrepreneurs journey, has well over 33,000 RSS readers

Last year, I was one of the first who took this excellent blogging course. 27 Awesome lessons, send once a week. Which means the course will be finished after half a year.

This also implies, since you will implement the various necessary elements of your blog along the way, that after completing this course your blog will be ready to earn money.

And it shows that Yaro is an honest guy, because he doesn’t keep taking your money. When it’s finished, it’s done! Then it’s your turn to make money with your blog.

If you’re in doubt, just watch this video.
It’s 32 minutes long and explains the system of blogging Yaro used for the past two years to make *at least* $10,000 per month from his blog – up to as much as $35,000 a month!
It’s an easy to use system and thousands of people already use it to great success – unfortunately most bloggers do not.

Or watch this one.
It is an interview with Alborz Fallah, who owns a blog that is worth $5 million!
Alborz started off as a student of Yaro’s Blog Mastermind course and has blogged his way to the top.

Or download his free ebook called Blog Profits Blueprint.
If you haven’t got that one, you can still download it for free.

Click these links right now, because they allow you to discover what quality we’re talking about here.

If you’re convinced, just sign up for the course.
It may seem a bit pricy at first, but this is not just great information packed in a awesome course.

No, it’s much more than that.

You’re buying experience!
You buy what worked for Yaro, a super A-blogger, so your learning curve is very, very steep. You get direct access to your own blog mentor, plus all kinds of audios, videos and e-lessons to help you make money from your own blog.
Beast everything else.

Sign up today for Blog Mastermind.
After a few lessons, start promoting the program, so you will earn your money back. Yaro pays you every month, so this is recurring income!

When you’re running a serious blog with quality content, chances are at some point you want to monetize it in some way. Adsense ads, banners, links, donations, reviews or affiliate programs, whatever.

But if you take the jump to monetize your blog, it implies that you’ll need readers first. After all, who would see your offers and click on the ads without visitors, right? And the only way to get visitors is to generate traffic.

So, before even thinking about making money with your blog, you first should create great value in the form of quality content and a kind of community of readers that return frequently to read and post their comments.
Make sense?

Now, the question is: when do you start monetizing your blog?
Daniel Socco of Daily Blog Tips answers that question as a guest poster on Problogger.net: When Should I Put Advertising on My Blog?.

That is, Daniel doesn’t give an exact time table, but states that any monetizing efforts before 6 months of existence is too early.

I took my time with this blog. I started it back in 2004 just as an experiment, but really began blogging seriously about a year ago. All I did was post quality articles and market them to get visitors and RSS and email subscribers.

My first little steps to monetize this blog was an occasional promotion as an affiliate for some excellent products that I strongly believe in and use myself. It’s the easiest way to start monetizing your blog. And probably the most profitable.

Still, most content posted was free advice on the topics listed under categories. Readership is growing, slowly, -dang, I have so many other things to do- but steadily.

A couple of months ago, I tweaked the template, so I was able to show some banner ads in the sidebar and make money with them. My second little step.

The reason for that were a couple of emails I received for banner and link advertising quotations. Imagine, people asking for fees to place ads on my blog!

Next, because I want to keep in control and therefore do not like to use an external service, I had to select an ad management system.

Since I took Yaro Starak’s BlogMastermind, I first checked out the program he uses as described in Making money from your website using advertising.
I briefly tested it, but then read a post by Andy Beard about Oiopublisher (amongst other systems) and found that much easier to implement.

The funny thing is, as soon as I implemented Oiopublisher, I immediately got a customer, even before I was able to test this system online. They did it for me and it worked like charm; not a finger to lift!

Since Oiopublisher also comes with paid link management, I can add that in a blink too and that’s what I just did.

The next step could be paid reviews, since Oiopublisher manages that too, but I’m not sure about that strategy. Some bloggers ask $50 or as low as $30 for a review and they probably create such posts in less than an hour.
I can’t.
I need at least several hours to make an honest review. Spending that much time forces me to ask at least $150 for a review, if not more. That may be too early for this blog.

An alternative is to add Adsense, but personally I’m not that fond of ads in my posts. Also, although I must admit that they probably will work, I’m not sure about the proceeds.

So, I’m back to the resources I used to set up a monetization strategy. And the first one is BlogMasterMind, the excellent and complete blogging course, already mentioned above.
And of course the posts from the most successful bloggers on the Net. Like Marlon Sanders used to say: “Do not create mediocrity when you can copy genius”.
Here are some of them:
