But soon after you start selling a few of your own products, you probably have to deliver support to your customers from time to time.

So, what do you do?

Right, on the download page you display your support email address and tell your customers to send a message in case anything goes wrong, right?

Then, after some time, you’re going to sell more and more and the number of emails you receive soon grow above your head.

Because there are not only support request, but also invitations for events, requests for guest posts, reviews and JV’s, and then, sometimes, even a friend wants to email you.

• A FAQ / Knowledge Base

  makes it very easy to supply and erase FAQ’s on your website and see how many times each entry has been viewed.

  That enables you to evaluate possible problems your customers have with your sites, products and services. It also may give an indication for new products.

Of course help desk management software should be able to send email messages, preferably personalized and features like follow-up satisfaction surveys and reporting / statistics are very welcome.

There’s a lot of software available, from free to a couple of thousands of dollars, from great to really worthless. In the past I’ve tried a few of them with varying success.

The one I like very much is Three Pillars.

Granted, I’m biased here. I’ve seen it being developed by my good friend Willie Crawford.
I saw how he desperately needed help and how he build an extremely practical help desk management software package.

Proof of this practical application is that a new customer doesn’t have to go through the boring procedure or registering (again) before submitting a ticket. She can do that right away.

So What Is YOUR Excuse Again?

In the world of Internet marketing, there are really ONLY two broad categories of people… those who make excuses, and those who “find a way… no matter what”.

I think that I fall into the “find a way” category. As a youth, stuck in the cycle of poverty and welfare, I certainly didn’t see a clear path. I didn’t have any mentors or role models that I could conveniently hang out with. So, it took me over 20 years to figure out how simple success really is.

Another person who clearly fits in the “find a way” category is my friend Clay Cotton. Clay clearly validates that the excuses category really consists of people who CHOOSE to make excuses instead of taking action.

Yes, they chose it.

It’s interesting. Clay was a talented piano player who once ran with the likes of Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix and scores of showbiz legends. That is until the M.S. ended his piano playing in 1996.

When that great “excuse to make excuses” hit Clay “Pow! Right between the eyes” he gravitated directly to Internet marketing where Clay and his wife, Kimberly, have made a modest living since 1996. Clay even taught from the stage in a wheelchair until 2002 at which point travel became too difficult.

You see, as a result of Multiple Sclerosis, Clay is now nearly a full-blown quadriplegic. And Kimberly cares for him, since he can do very, very few physical things for himself.

Recently, with health care costs ballooning out of control and mounting bills Clay sized up his situation and asked himself, “Good God, what can I do?” So he discussed these issues with several online friends, including me.

Clay agreed that there are tremendous assets which he still has, aside from his heart-warming, caring personality – A sociable nature, an active mind and an ability to talk. Clay is a giver. He enjoys people and has a natural talent with words, and for persuasion.

So last week on the phone, Clay joked that he is evolving into a genuine “talking head”, but then asked, “Seriously, Willie, how can I still earn a living?”

Clay gave this some serious thought, and I could hear the ideas percolating, then agreed, and he enrolled in my 4-week tele-training, as you very well may…

The point here is that Clay could have given up and felt sorry for himself, and nobody would’ve argued the point. But…

Clay Cotton obviously chooses not to make excuses! This is his chosen way, as I suspect it might be with you

Clay asks himself what he can do to take responsibility for his future. Pure and simple.

Then he takes action. Period.

Clay clearly belongs in our “find a way… no matter what” category, and you WILL be hearing a lot more from him over time.

Easy Membership Script

The first resource is the one that I use most: TextPad.
It’s a powerful, general purpose editor for plain text files. I’ve been using it for a while and was so happy with it that I took the paid version. It keeps the annoying pop ups away that appear on an occasional Save click.

TextPad comes with many features and the one I like most is the ability to wrap lines and split them at the desired length. That makes it very easy to cut each text line at 55 or 60 characters.

But there are many more, like a ‘Warm Start’ that lets you restart exactly where you left off, unlimited undo/redo capability and an outstanding and a very powerful search/replace engine using UNIX-style regular expressions.
I use the search/replace feature a lot, for instance preparing phrase and exact keywords for PPC campaigns.

TextPad has a tabbed interface, allowing you to work on multiple files at the same time. Frequently used combinations of commands can be saved as keystroke macros and the programs comes with a spell checker with dictionaries for 10 languages.

Easy to use, with all the features a power user requires. I suggest you give it a try.

The other valuable resource I use is MWSnap. That is a small yet powerful graphics program for snapping (capturing) images from parts of the screen.

With MWSnap you can capture the full desktop, rectangles or an active menu. The program handles 5 most popular graphics formats, from which I like the png format best because of the balance between quality and file size.
The software also contains several graphical tools: a zoom, a ruler (for measuring screen objects lengths), a color picker and a window spy.

MWSnap does not require installation and does not need any special dlls, drivers or system files which can mess up your system and probably therefore is very small. The available hotkeys make it possible to snap screen shots of menus with the cursor.

MWSnap is freeware (although the developer Mirek accepts your donations) and you wouldn’t expect that kind of quality from such a program. But it delivers.
Strongly recommended.

TextPad and MWSnap: 2 Valuable Resources

…your affiliate ID is taken from the link, so you will not earn a commission. In that case, you definitely WANT to cloak your links, don’t you?

Another reason to cloak links is that you want to count how many people have clicked on them. Thus you can discover which links work well and which don’t.

Yet another reason could be, because your (affiliate) links are long and ugly. Especially when using them in text email they take a lot of space and sometimes break up into two or more lines.

So yes, there are valid reasons to mask your links.

There’s a lot of software available that can do the job very well, but there are also easy ways to cloak your links yourself.

One of the ways is to use a simple HTML redirect. You simply add the following line inside the <head> and </head> meta tags:

<meta http-equiv=”REFRESH” content=”0;url=http://www.the-link-to-redirect-to.com”>

Just replace ‘the-link-to-redirect-to.com’ by your link and you’re done.

IF you have log files available and IF they record access to such pages, then you have a counter too. That’s two ‘IF’s’ however.
Also, from the information I read from the SEO experts, this kind of link cloaking isn’t appreciated by search engines, because lots of people have abused this method.

You can also use Javascript to cloak your links quite easy. Here’s an example:

window.location = “http://www.the-link-to-redirect-to.com”
//–>
</script>

This redirect doesn’t leave a single trace, but it’s hard to count clicks to this page.

The same applies to this link cloak in PHP:

You can also use a htaccess redirect to cloak your links and even use a rewrite rule, but, although easy to implement, these solutions are too complicated for this post. I want to talk about an easier one.

You see, I use a simple PHP script that is very easy to set up. No PHP knowledge required. And it counts clicks! Nothing special, but it does its job very well.
Plus, and that’s another advantage of cloaking your links, if the page you’re referring to disappears from the Net, you can easily replace your cloaked link by another one!

Lots of these scripts use a MySQL database to store the information, but this one doesn’t. It’s a simple text file. No need to set up another database!
It’s a great balance between functionality and ease of installation.

Plus…
this script allows you to backup the text file containing your links from the screen, so if anything goes wrong, you’ll have a backup copy at your hard disk.

You can download your copy at PHP Click Counter. It comes with a very good user guide and again, is simple to install.

Don’t forget your security issues with regards to permission settings as described in Wordpress Security And A Plugin To Help You

And you may want to add a rel=”nofollow” to all of your cloaked links, as the refer to your counter script, which is useless in search engines.

Other software that you can check out is Smart Links. It allows you to turn your affiliate links that nobody wants to click on, into cash-generating magnets.

Another piece of very interesting software that is worth checking out is Affiliate ID Manager. It’s a program where you can store and manage all your IDs, passwords, affiliate links and other relevant details in ONE secured software. All your info will be orgazined and available to you so you can concentrate on your work instead of searching for your missing links… This essential tool will save lots of time and money and comes with …..Master Rebrandable Rights !!!

Free Rewrite Software and Foreclosure

But there’s more, much more.
After all, the first sale is only the beginning of generating money online, isn’t it?

Therefore I want to describe the ideal ecommerce system. Although you can use it to sell tangible products, I will limit my overview to the sales and delivery system for downloadable, digital products, because that’s what we use most in the Internet marketing niche.

So, let’s see how an ideal ecommerce system would look like.

From the moment your prospect hits the ‘Buy’ button, she should be transferred to a secure online payment system, indicated by ‘https’ instead of the usual ‘http’. Fortunately most popular payment processors like Clickbank and Paypal do this automatically.

The payment should be instant and confirmed, so you know your money is safe. If you use PayPal, this implies you also have to implement the IPN feature that PayPal uses to confirm the payment.

After you made sure you received the payment, you should deliver the product to your customer.
But remember that the URL for the download link can be passed to the payment processor, so it can send your customer back to your download page.
Intercepting that URL to the download page by evil persons could result in theft of your product. So the call to the payment processor should always be encrypted.

If you’re a smart marketer, you should have your customer sign up for your customer list, rather then keeping her on your prospect list. So, after showing her where and how to download the product, you also want her to sign up for your customer list.

Lots of people only provide download instructions AFTER having their customer sign up for the customer list. I do not use this method, since it implies a form of ‘forced continuity’ and anything ‘forced’ isn’t good in my opinion. I rather persuade her to subscribe to my list or, even better, switch her from the prospect list to my customer list automatically.

Whatever you do, you should have your prospect on your customer list now.

Because now it’s time to make extra money with your back end products. All the people on your customer list have trusted you once with their money. They’re proven buyers. And easy to approach with your next outstanding offer!

Another way to make extra money from your customers is to present them with a ‘One Time Offer‘ (OTO).

The best time to present such an offer is during the download process, because she’s in a buying mood. Again, I would not force them to look at your OTO before they can download the product they’ve just bought, because they want instant gratification and it’s another ‘forced’ option, but you have to test that.
A great OTO can do wonders for your online income.

So there you have your basic ecommerce system.
But why do all that alone?
Why not have an army of salesmen working for you and generate even more online income?

You can achieve that by running an affiliate program for your products. And you don’t have to wait until affiliates stop by at your site. Since your client now is on your customer list, it’s easy to follow up with a message announcing your affiliate program. Offer a nice incentive, such as a 100% commission on the front product.

You can even build a better and more motivated affiliate team by also offering commissions on back end products too, but that’s up to you.
Providing great marketing tools for your affiliate army is an outstanding way to have them sell more, so you’d better give them these tools.

And the most powerful way of making money is landing some great joint ventures (JV’s). Having JV partners endorse your products to their lists can skyrocket your income, certainly if they have responsive lists. Therefore you should deal with them in a different, more personal way, increasing the incentives, so they’re more willing to work with you.

On top of that, you must split-test your sales pages so you can measure the effects of each an every element in there. Furthermore, you must use trackers on all of your links, to learn what works, what works even better and what doesn’t work. Presenting great conversion numbers can increase your chances to land a splendid JV.

Do this with all your sales pages and products and you’ll end up with an ideal ecommerce system.
