Why every blogger should AB test their way to higher profits

If you own a blog and the aim of that blog is to make money then my guess is that more than half of you are missing out on lots of potential income.

There’s many ways to make more money from your blog but two are very obvious. Two obvious ways to increase revenue from your blog are to get more visits to the blog or to make more money out of the people who already visit your blog.

Most bloggers spend much, much more of their time thinking about how they can get more visits to their site rather than how they can make more of their existing traffic.

This seems crazy as a few simple tests could give you a big increase in conversions and a 20% increase in conversions may be a much easier way to increase your revenue than a 20% increase in traffic.

So how can you increase revenue from your existing traffic?
The first thing to consider is what measurable actions result in an increase in revenue?

Do you make money through affiliate links in products you recommend in your newsletter? If so newsletter sign-ups might be a measurable action you could look to increase.

Do you have an eBook that makes you money or do you have pages promoting software that can help other bloggers that you make money from (again perhaps through affiliate links)? Do you make money from Adsense? All of these things are measurable actions.

Using an AB test to increase conversions
First let’s look at what a conversion rate is.
A conversion rate is the rate at which a measurable action is achieved. For an online marketer or blogger it describes is the percentage of your visitors that complete a measurable action.

For example if you have 100 people who visit your eBook page and 2 of them buy it then you have a conversion rate of 2%.
If you could increase you conversion rate to just 3% you would make 50% more from your eBook sales.

The easiest way to increase conversions is to AB test and it’s not only easier than you might think it’s free!

An AB test tests two different versions of a page to work out which one gives the best conversion rate. This is achieved by sending half of the traffic to one page (page A) and half to the other (page B) and measuring the conversion rate of each page to work out which one gives the best result.

Using the example of the eBook landing page (the landing page will be the page you land the visitor on to try and sell them your eBook), you could test two pages with different titles or different images or different content.
If you change just one thing you will be able to measure the impact that changing that one element has.

If you have never done any testing before for the page in question it can be worth starting with something a little more drastic and trying to very different landing pages for your eBook. Once you see which page out of A and B is best (this is called the winning variant), then start to change one element at a time from this wining variant to keep improving conversion rates.

For example maybe start with changing the title of the page, then try the image, then the size of the title or the color, then the position of the offer on the page or the size and position of the ‘buy’ button for the eBook.

You might be thinking that this sounds complicated and expensive but it’s not.
AB testing can be run free of charge using Google’s Website Optimizer.
You can find details of exactly how to do this in their excellent tutorials section here which has videos to help you get started.

Google Website Optimizer also offers a more advanced form of testing called multivariate testing. It’s advisable to start with an AB test first.

Mobiles have become almost as necessary as water and electricity in our homes.

Two of the most important concerns on our minds when it comes to everyday life are money and environment, and there is no less worry when it comes to something like a mobile.

There are some great ways to cut down on these costs, though.

1. Recycle your mobile phone.

   It is estimated that 2.25 million tons of electronic waste goes into landfills each year, and much of this is highly toxic.

   If you plan on buying a new phone, make sure that you find a way to recycle the old one. You can do this by selling it to someone who needs it. Or donate it to a charitable organization. Or take it to a large chain store to have it recycled. Some mobile service providers that sell phones will buy them back and give you a significant amount of money off of your new phone.

2. If you are considering switching mobile service providers, ask your prospective provider about SIM only plans. This will let you use the phone that you already have with the new provider, instead of switching to a new phone.

   SIM only plans are a great value, since they are usually less expensive than a standard plan where you have to buy a new device. By keeping your current mobile phone, you will also be using less material that goes into the electronics.

3. Do a bit of research on both your service provider and the manufacturer of the mobile phone that you want. 6. Keep your eyes open for cashback opportunities. Websites that keep track of cashback opportunities will often keep a list of mobile phone providers that pay a certain commission when site viewers click on a link. In return, the cashback site will pass the commission on to the consumers.

   Some retailers pay a certain percentage of how much you spend and others pay fixed sums. This can earn you some good deals, if you work them correctly.

Until recently the very phrase “high-tech” referred to, in most peoples’ minds, the quickly changing computer industry and the ability for most to obtain excellent service, good download speed and package options for their home or office computer.

The desktop tower is today still a fixture in homes and businesses. But the rapid evolution of high speed internet options and the 3G and 4G networks (see below) has raised questions concerning the choice of internet options and connection and getting the most for your money.

The Major Advantages of Fixed High Speed Internet Options

Today most homes and business computers are connected to a DSL or cable modem, which allows rapid upload/download, lightning-fast connection to web content and the ability to view an extensive amount of streamed material.

Because the network is so large and uses a huge number of servers the reliability is extraordinarily high.

And cable service is constant so long as the bill is being paid, so there is very little chance of drop-offs or interruptions due to bad weather or usage limits.

Also since most of these services are operated by established cable companies, the account holder often saves a large sum of money by bundling their TV, telephone and Internet into one package.
A cable delivering television programming can also carry the Internet signal and the phone service with ease.

A Few Restrictions of Fixed High Speed Internet Options like Cable and DSL Internet

Of course the user of a cable modem must have a computer physically attached to the input source or employ a wireless transmitter.

The latter has limited range and usually can service a laptop or notebook in the near vicinity but not from a great distance.

Also depending on the operating system, the computer hardware itself and the browser used, the desktop computer is a little trickier when it comes to connecting to services via apps or shortcuts.

The service package includes phone service in most cases, but the phone itself is connected to the modem and is therefore similar to a land-line unit.

The Best & Worst Of 3G And 4G mobile internet

3G describes the 3rd generation of wireless connectivity allowing access to the internet anywhere with a suitable mobile reception from your carrier.

3G internet is typically capable of speeds up to 7.2Mbs although this can be raised with upgrades to the mobile networks.
However, in reality most speeds average around 1Mbps.

By comparison 4G is capable of much faster speeds.

There are two types of 4G technology, WiMAX and LTE.
LTE is the more widespread of the two and has a theoretical maximum upload speed of 300Mbps though real life speeds are likely to be in the 5Mbps – 15Mbs range putting it on a par with good fixed line cable internet options.

4G is capable of these faster speeds by splitting the data over a range of radio frequencies which enables more data to be transferred per second.

Smart phones are evolving rapidly and the innovations of the early 21st century such as twittering and emailing are now well-established; the race is on to have these small pocket-sized devices serve as a mini-computer that connects to everything one desires.

It is indeed wonderful how the latest in smart phone technology allows the user to pay a bill, purchase concert tickets and post on social networks in the wink of an eye.
And of course these options are available no matter where the user is located.

4G networks allow individuals to take advantage of data hungry activities that would normally require a fixed high speed internet connection such as downloading movies or steaming video (though be careful to check for exceeding data caps if you use a 3G or 4G mobile broadband connection for this).

But of major concern is the reliability.

Broadband width is at a premium and the demand far outsize’s the availability.
The network platform differs from one part of the world to the other, with Europe using a single communications connection structure and North America using two.

The cost of these packages is greater than that of a typical fixed high speed internet like a cable connection and the options are usually extra. Family plans are available but will appeal only to those who wish to do most of their calling, data transfer and TV viewing on these small devices.

Also the industry that manufactures telephones and computer hardware is rapidly becoming slave to the network companies. They must produce the products according to the communications services requirements rather than develop technology on their own.

In the next few years there will be more design changes to smart phones, iPads and notebooks, because the very structure of the broadband networks continue to evolve.
Expect the price to drop for full services and features as well as better international availability no matter what device is used.

Slow broadband connection speeds can be frustrating.

We live in a world that is increasingly online and having a slow connection can slow down your entire life: Entertainment, friends, work, education, love, and more may be taking place online.

Here are five easy tips to increase your broadband connection speeds – and they won’t cost you a cent!

1. Keep your wireless router in the same room

   The walls in your home or apartment can interfere significantly with your broadband connection speeds.
   As a rule of thumb, every wall between your computer and the router decreases connectivity by about 25%.

   For best results, try to place the router next to your computer, or at least in the same room.

2. Use shorter cables

   Longer Ethernet or phone cables produce greater resistance, which decreases your connection speeds.
   Cut your cord length in half and you’ll also halve the resistance in the cable.

   For DSL this may mean moving your router closer to the phone jack, and for the Ethernet you may want to place your desk near the port so you can use a 5′ cable instead of a 25′ cable across the room.

3. Elevate your wireless router

   Giving the wireless signal an unobstructed pathway to your computer can do wonders for your connection speeds.

   To test this, put your head near your computer and check if you can see directly to your router. If something is in the way, move it and try again.
   Once you have a clear line of sight to the router your broadband connection speeds will increase. Even having the router under your desk may significantly slow down broadband speed.

   If at all possible, move the router so that it is visible from your computer.

4. Avoid lots of other wires

   Wireless signals, like microwaves or light, are part of the electromagnetic spectrum. That means strong electrical currents or magnetic fields can obstruct or redirect their path.

   If your wireless router is caught in a tangle of wires for your computer, printer, scanner, speakers, and desk lamp then you have created a huge electric force field blocking wireless signals from reaching your computer.
   Clearing these wires (possibly by elevating your router or moving it closer to the computer) will boost your broadband speed — and clean up that unsightly mess under your desk!

5. Eliminate bandwidth-hogging applications

   Right now your computer is running tons of background applications, some of which are entirely unnecessary for your computer or program to function but are still constantly accessing the internet.

   Your browser or chat client has to compete for bandwidth with these applications, which can really bog down connection speed. Open the Task Manager and close any programs that are unnecessary.

   You may also be able to access the list of start up programs — the ones that open automatically when the computer reboots — and remove those that are unnecessary or require internet access.

   You can also disable the automatic sign-in feature on chat clients so they only connect to the internet when you need them.

   Finally, installing an antivirus program may force programs to ask your permission to access the internet. Don’t think Google Updater needs to access the Web while you are uploading that important file? With one click you can cut it off from internet access.

I think anyone can do this, but just to be sure, here’s a rundown.

Installation:

• Upload and activate the plugin
• Fill in the standard settings
• Add a (hard to guess) download directory to the wp-content folder

Then this WordPress payment plugin is ready to work for you.
(There was a little flaw in unpacking the zip file, because it contained an identically named sub folder in the main folder. You have to get rid of one of them if that’s still the case when you download the product.)

Next, you’ll need to fill in your account info, like

• your PayPal email address and an authorisation code and/or Clickbank ID and secret code and/or E-Junkie Client ID
• your support info
• your download expiration time
• some random keys to encrypt your download page and link
• upload the provided .htaccess file to your download directory for extra security (I had to strip the rewrite url to index.php only)

That’s it.

Next, you want to fill in product details.

Before doing that, you have to create a thank-you and download page once-only.
You can use WordPress to do that or create a simple HTML page.
Samples of download and thank-you pages are provided in the package and the source shows the many variables that you can use inside these pages. Just copy and paste the source into your WordPress pages.

Then you’ll add the product specifications into the plugin, like

• product ID, description, price
• the selected payment processor (PayPal, Clickbank or even an affiliate program)
• the names of your sales page, download page and thank you page (just the names, no URL’s to store)
• the name of the download file
• email message to be send to your customers

Of course, for every product you want to sell, you’ll have to create a sales page and include the generated code for the payment button.

Officially called “Google Webmasters”, also referred to as “Google Webmasters Tool” or even “Google Webmaster Central”.

Whatever you call it, Google checker is an essential webmasters tool that also serves as a search engine optimizer. For the most important amongst all search engines: Google.

If you’re not familiar with Google checker, you absolutely have to use this online application to drastically improve your website.

Here are the basics of this wonderful webmasters tool.

If you already have a Google account or use Gmail you just need to sign in and go to webmasters.google.com. Otherwise you have to register there first.

Then you can add your website(s) to the dashboard for inclusion.
Each added website needs to be authenticated (which is just to prevent identity theft, etc). You can do this by either inserting a line of code into your home page HTML or by uploading a unique file (generated by Google checker; just copy and paste) onto your website (using FTP). Either way is quick and easy.

Next, uploading an XML sitemap of your website to the Google checker is an outstanding idea. If you don’t know how to do this, use Google again to search for ‘google xml sitemap creation’. There are plenty of sites that can create such maps.
After you’re done, upload the map to your site as a page, but with an extension .xml instead of .html. Submit that URL to the Google checker.

Google thus knows the location of your web pages which helps indexing them.
Now that you’re doing this anyway, take some time to also create an HTML sitemap as well (again, use Google to find such a service), upload it as a (normal HTML) page and link to it from your homepage. This helps the other search engines, that don’t use the XML format, index your pages.

After you’ve done this, Google needs some time (give them two weeks, but you can check frequently) to crawl your website and gather data about it.
When that’s done, you’ll have tons of information from the most important search engine at your fingertips!

Some of the more important figures that you can find in the Google checker:

Site Configuration.
It’s very important to use the right settings for your site. You can manage a lot in here and it’s wise to spend some time figuring out how you want your site to be indexed.

Search Queries
This area of the dashboard reveals some of your main keywords for which Google is displaying your website to searchers. Ideally, you want to ensure that the keywords that you originally chose for your website feature in this list. If not, back to the SEO grindstone…

Crawl Errors
Crawl errors won’t do your site any good for search engine optimization, so you better make sure to clear this area up as soon as possible. If there are any crawl errors on your site, find out where they are, and adjust those links. If they’re coming from other sites, use 301 redirects.

Links to Your Site
This section contains an overview of internal and external links that Google has detected. Coming from Google itself, this is important information. Despite the fact, that it sometimes seems fairly inconsistent, Google usually seems to update these figures at least once a month. Your goal should be to try to grow this figure every month.

At the left side navigation bar, Google checker lists lots of other options, including diagnostics and crawl stats. Take some time to learn what these statistic mean.
