Excellent point there Case. I myself own a network of niche content sites and I made a site about mortgage unique by adding in a turnkey mortgage calculator. That eventually became the USP when I sold the site for $500 (four day old site with approx. 30 uniques/day)

I don't have much of an experience with larger sites as I hardly am involved in any businesses as such.

You are dead on regarding USPs - they are extremely important to the livelihood of any business and most website owners fail to ever implement such a message.

I work with various eCommerce businesses on a regular basis and one of the first things I always have to recommend to my clients is adding a USP. Less than 10% of the websites I've worked on come aboard with this message in place.

I have yet to witness a scenario where adding a USP to a website has not increased conversions and visitor interest.

That's super Melody. Not only did you try another search phrase, but you also tested the results...
Bingo!
Great example. :-)

Case, That's true. However let me give you an example of what I mean...

I used to own a promotional products company for many years. One of the things that we provided our customers was custom printed pens. After watching my search phrases I discovered that the higher number of searches were done for "advertising pens" rather than "custom printed pens." I changed the wording on both my online and offline marketing material and found that it truely was a term that my clients - even the big ones related to more. It seemed like an awkward phrase to me but not to my customers.

Our lingo is not always translated the way we think it is in the minds of our customers. I believe that search terms give some insite to the thought process of our prospects and clients.

Thanks for the opportunity to share.

@Melody Anything you can meaningful use in the matching process is welcome, but remember, you have to convince your prospects with your USP, not the search engines.

I had a thought while reading this post - I don't know if anyone has ever done this, but what about using a list of long tail search terms in addition to the lists you mentioned above. That way the language of your USP would be worded to match what your market is searching for.

Great blog you have here!
