Easy Backups

As your online business grows, the data on your PC becomes more and more important.
That is, if you work like me and have copies of all your websites on your computer. If that’s the case, you’ll need to make backups of your hard drive, otherwise your business will get very vulnerable.
And at least once a week, sometimes more often, I make a backup of my blog too and save it on my hard disk.
Every piece of information I upload to my websites and all software that I download from the Net are stored on my PC’s hard disk.
To make backups, I use two external hard drives. They’re NOT connected to my PC when I’m online.
Once a week I run an extra virus check on all new information stored. If nothing is found, I disconnect from the Internet and copy necessary data to my two external hard drives. It’s more a copy than a backup, but I can use it as such.
After doing so, I switch them off again. One of them stays in the house, the other one goes to a friend nearby.
It’s an easy system to create solid backups.
By the way, to synchronize all data on the three drives, I use FreeCommander, powerful free software.
Exaggerated? I don’t think so.
If you’ve ever experienced a disk crash or the famous ‘The Blue Screen Of Death‘, you’ll know what I’m talking about.
And I had a website account closed once, due to overuse of the server capacity it resided on, a result of a misconfiguration.
Also, on one occasion, a business partner refused to transfer a domain name to me after we split the business. Fortunately, I had backups and uploaded them on another site.
But there are more reasons to make a backup. Theft, fire, deletion by accident, viruses, adware or other malware, and so on. Don’t think you will never be in these situations. They CAN happen.
Instead of using external drives to copy your information, you can also store it on the Net. I’ve never tried that, because I don’t know who to trust with my date, but there are services out there. Lynn Terry has found an automated remote backup solution after her recent computer crash.
So….
do YOU make backups?

I have been reading about the online backup industry for a while now. Online backup is maturing and slowly getting the attention of the general consumer. One website worth mentioning is the backup review site:
http://www.BackupReview.info
This very informative site, not only posts up to date news and articles from the industry, but also lists about 400 online backup companies and ranks the top 25 on a monthly basis and features a CEO Spotlight page, where senior management people from the industry are interviewed.

Hi Case,
Wanted to let you know I featured (and excerpted) this post on Daily Marketing Ace today. Great info and definitely something that I and other entrepreneurs need to see.
I didn’t see my trackback show up here, so I wanted to comment to let you know I published part of this post as a tip today (with links, of course)
Thanks!
Doug

Thanks for the remainder, i always used to back-up my files once in a month, but in your point of view its better to take up a copy atleast once in a week as you list out some of the reasons. Good post!
