Wordpress membership plugin

Wordpress membership plugin

Some people have asked me how to build a membership site using Wordpress for content management.
And my answer usually is to buy a membership script (like Amember) and put Wordpress inside.

But now there’s a new player in town, a Wordpress Membership Plugin.

I haven’t tried this one, but it looks promising and flexible. The only thing I’m missing in the feature list is PayPal IPN checking. I absolutely would like to have that incorporated if I targeted the IM market.
For the rest it’s worth trying.

Although you’d better have a good reason to create such a membership.
These days they’re popping up like popcorn at the cinema and most of them will not be successful. That’s because they aren’t able to create a great community.

I found a great article about that topic and if you consider setting up a membership site (or a forum), check out The Art of Creating a Community by Guy Kawasaki.

But IF you have a good reason to build a membership site, check out the plugin.
And if you already have used it, please let me know your opinion about it. I’m curious about this one.

Check it out and let me know your thoughts.

Case

EDIT:
The WordPress Membership Plugin has been moved to new website http://www.gootix.com/
Documentation can be found at http://gootix.com/docs/paybox/
EDIT2
Even that site doesn’t work anymore. Check out Easy Membership Script. Not free, but at least it works.
Also check out Members Only.

Case, I am probably going to get this and give it a try.

Although – I’m curious…why is the IPN feature important?

Thanks,
–Donnie

Hey Donnie,
IPN is important to prevent thieves from changing the monthly fees.
It’s easy to do that, just intercept the payment link to PayPal, change the variables in there, like price, and submit it again.

PayPal sends a notification to your IPN page and you have to send that info back to PP. So they (and you) know, the transaction was performed by PP.

All your IPN script has to do now is check the amount and if that’s ok, let the buyer in.
If anything went wrong, and you have to check that in your IPN script, you can decide not to let them in into your membership.

Just a security measure.

Hope this helps.

Case

Thanks Semmy, but it seems that’s just temporarily.

The store is currently undergoing maintenance and will be available shortly.”

I purchased the plugin last week, and I found the process of paying and downloading confusing (and I’m an experienced web user). Their forum had a lot of messages on it about no one replying to support requests, and now as of today I see the forum has gone down for maintenance.

Michelle,
Did you try the PayBox Documentation at http://gootix.com/docs/paybox/?

The WP-Members plugin is currently a free plugin for WordPress that restricts content to registered site members. I haven’t added PayPal integration, but I plan to add that in the future.

Also, I will be adding moderated/approved registration (currently it sends a random password, but the user then has access) as well as a free trial period.

I’d be interested to know how WP-Members compares in it’s current state and how adding these features would stack up.

The plugin page is http://butlerblog.com/wp-members

I bought the Gootix 10 site license. Nothing works. Sergios not only closed down the site, but now his tickets system is closed down (prompting me to post this on the web). I have many pending tickets. The most troublesome part of his software is that even if you’re “logged in” on the site you still can’t see premium content. All of the other problems I’ve already written at the Wordpress forums. I don’t recommend this product.

In addition the IPN in the PayBox won’t work especially if you’re running multiple sites, because PayPal only provides one IPN. I can’t have multiple sites all returning back to only one site. Unless anybody knows a way around this. That ticket I issued Gootix could have been the writing on the wall.

I’m now working with Shannon Whitley who’s developed Easy PayPal
plugin, and not only did he respond fast to me, but he’s also tailoring the plugin to suit my needs (yeah, I’d recommend paying him to get a good job done). I offered to pay Gootix to get the job done and that ticket closed itself after a week!

I’m still interested to learn more about more functionality of IPN especially when selling different things on different websites–if anybody has heard anything or can direct me. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about that Mike. At the time of writing this post, it was a great plugin.

About your IPN questions: you should download the IPN guide from the PayPal site.
In there, you can learn how you can override your account settings using the notify_url in a transaction.

There’s a great IPN script available at Belahost.
They also allow you to test it there. Great resource!

Mike, I have responded to your other thread over at http://www.wordpress.org forum. Please take couple minutes from your time and read it, as you will see the problems is not from our end. (except of one/two)

Thank you

I have bough this plugin and over a week later I am still waiting for it to be activated. Then I found that they had listed the whole online business for sale. Link here: http://marketplace.sitepoint.com/auctions/37376

In the listing they say: “I cannot offer anymore the needed support to my clients” and then “Personally for next few months i will be working offline and fixing some health issues.”

Myself and a lot of other people have paid good money for this plugin and are now left out of pocket while GooTix.com want $20′000 for their site and software. They dont even have a programmer, he left. So anyone with a bug is doomed.
If I were you I would check these details and then remove any mention of their plugin from your site.

That’s bad news Dave.
Sorry to hear you’re in such a position.
And a shame for that plugin too. But maybe another buyer will take it up, who knows.
Hoping for the best.

Wordpress Membership Plugin - MemberWing says:
October 3rd, 2008 at 5:00 pm

I just created wordpress membership plugin that I decided to make free for all.
My idea was to built premium membership site that could still be indexed and ranked by search engines. Other solutions just close contents completely and it was not acceptable for me.
So I build MemberWing (as a volunteer effort for spiritual development website).

It supports:
- Free custom teasers at the beginnig of each articles (allows this to be indexed and ranked by Google)
- 4 levels of membership – Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum.
- Supports any Wordpress Theme
- Works with any Wordpress site – new or already existing.
- Supports latest version of Wordpress.

Would be happy to hear feedback.

Here’s the main site for it: http://www.memberwing.com/

G.E.
