Is your Wordpress blog search engine optimized?

If not, you’re missing free traffic from the search engines. You wouldn’t want that to happen, do you?

Here are a few SEO tips for Wordpress that I use.

1. Permalinks
A permalink is a URL that points to a specific blogging entry even after the entry has passed from the front page into the blog archives.

Wordpress allows you to include a few tags in permalinks.
I strongly recommend you include %postname% in your links.
Optionally, you can also include %year% and/or %monthnum%, but leave other tags out. They’re useless.

Do NOT make the mistake to change the permalinks after your site is indexed or none of your pages can be found.

2. Your Page Titles
Wordpress likes to use the name of your blog and the right angle quote (») in the titles of your page (which can be seen at the very top of your browser).
At my blog here, a page title would look as

Affordable Internet Marketing Blog » title of the post

That’s stupid, because the title of the post should be at the beginning, because, if you blog well, it contains your main keyword of that post.
Also, your page title is used in the search result pages (SERP’s) and they are often truncated at a certain point. That would mean that every page listed in the SERP’s would start with the same keywords, the main ones being truncated.

Get rid of them. You can check out this SEO Title Tag 2.0 beta7.

3. Post Titles
Put them in H1-tags.
In the hierarchy of most important parts of your web pages, the Title is the most important, followed by H1, H2, etc.
Since your post title contains the main keyword of the post, it should be between H1 tags!

4. Home???
I see many blogs without a link back to the home page and I also see lots of blogs with a link called ‘Home’ (that’s called the anchor text).
Wrong!
You must have a link back to main URL on every page, using your main keyword (hopefully as in the domain name) as anchor text.

5. Ping!
Yes, you should ‘ping’, but wait until you gained a bit of experience using Wordpress, because every time you change a post, it gets ‘pinged’ and too many pings in a short period of time raise flags!
(There’s a great plugin to prevent that: Smart Update Pinger)

Just wait until you have 15 to 20 posts that you’re satisfied with and then go to Options/Writings and fill in the service at the bottom of the page.
Here’s where you can get more info on Update Services.

Works like charm.
