Powerful Free Desktop Utility Center
Last Thursday, Google announced that their Google Desktop 5 was available in 29 languages.
Inside Google Desktop says:
“With the dramatically increasing amount of content out there, you need better ways to find relevant information, whether searching your computer or reading the latest headlines in sidebar.”
When the Google Desktop was introduced, it was focussed on the capability to index and search your own hard drive using the Google search techniques.
That’s how I still used it until recently.
But there’s more, because it has evolved to a real utility center, since Google included the “sidebar” that lets you dock “gadgets” to perform different information management tasks.

So now, besides finding any file on your computer, among other things, you can also manage and read email, use the calender to add and monitor items and manage a ‘to do’ list. The gadgets let you to add a lot of extras.
Thus, the Desktop allows you to center various info management tasks and have it available at your finger tips.
In Getting the most out of Google Desktop, Mendel Chuang, Google’s Desktop Product Marketing Manager, refers to a few experienced desktop users who show you different ways to use this utility efficiently.
Good news for Mac users. You can use it too. Check out the Mac version.
There were some vulnerability issues reported for the Desktop. Here’s Google’s reaction to that.
